I didn’t even know columbine could be this particular petal shape but the leaves look like a columbine. This one grew unexpectedly in my back garden this year.

Ich habe heute Abend in der hintersten Gartenecke doch noch ein Exemplar der zweifarbigen Akelei gefunden 😍. Bin so froh, sie ist noch von meiner Oma.
Sie ist schon ein bisschen verblasst, aber innen ist sie weiß und außen (normalerweise) kräftig lila.
Werde die Samen dann später im Topf anziehen und zur Sicherheit gezielt auspflanzen. ☺️ -

Schon meine Großmutter und Mutter haben #Akelei #Columbines gesammelt und mich mit ihrer Leidenschaft angesteckt.
Leider sind der Haussanierung Pflanzen zum Opfer gefallen, aber im wilden Gartenbereich haben sich einige bewahrt.
Nur mein Liebling, eine zweifarbige Sorte (weiß-lila), hat dieses Jahr nicht geblüht. Nun hoffe ich auf den nächsten Frühling.
Sobald die Samenstände erscheinen, gehe ich bei den Nachbarn auf Sammeljagd 😉. -

Possibly the looniest native columbine there is: Golden columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha). Those ridiculously long spurs make the flowers look like little spaceships.
This columbine is found in the US southwest from Arizona to Texas, as well as in northwestern Mexico. While the Pacific Northwest has its own native yellow columbine (A. flavescens), its flowers are nowhere near as spectacular.

I was really excited to see this golden columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha) blooming today. This plant had a tough life in its original spot in my gardens, so I dug it up and put it in a pot, which appears to be exactly what it wanted.
This plant grows by desert springs and in moist canyons in the US southwest and northern Mexico, particularly where pine trees are nearby. I think the flowers look like rocketships from the old Buck Rogers serials.

When we moved to our current home 40+ years ago, there were some rose bushes along a fence. The roses bloomed every year. Over time, the fence was replaced and hydrangea, ferns and a burning bush took over where the roses had been and at some point, the roses stopped blooming. Then 2 years ago, a single rose bloomed.
This is that rose.

Columbine flowers.
They bloom in late April in our yard. They're so pretty, they look like curtains. I especially like the stamens hanging out of the flower. They plants are about 1-1.5 feet tall and the flowers hang down, so I often sit or lay on the ground to shoot up into the flowers.
