Today, not being very motivated at work, I wondered if there wasn’t something I could play “stealthily” and I landed on Colossal Cave Adventure, which I could play in a tiny CLI window. 🤫
It’s a text adventure from the 70s.

I find the idea of text adventures very intriguing, but like with point & click adventures, I’m not patient enough to play them a lot.
It might be fun to draw a map to, but that would have been a bit too obvious at work.

“Ahh yes, I’m making a …. a flowchart!”

I also played a bit of Zork, and it caught my interest more because it has (I think?) a clearer goal and some dramatic tension, while CCA seems to be mostly about wandering through various locations.

The text and parser interface somehow give the illusion that “anything could be possible”, even if the games are probably very limited.

An adventure game discussion not too long ago reminded me that this remake of #ColossalCaveAdventure exists, so I gave the demo a try.

Not much demo in that 2.6 GB download, to be honest, but enough to get a feel for the controls, which were functional enough. You look through a well house for items, unlock a grate at the end of a stream, climb down, and then the game ends as you try to proceed further.
