As the night ends, we are getting ready to get in the car and my friend puts his hand on my shoulder.

He looks me dead in the eye and says calmly to me, "I don't like this, but you made me promise."

He then proceeds to punch me in the gut as hard as he could. It's the only moment in my life I thanked someone for hitting me.

And that is the true story of my 1 cigarette I ever smoked.

Back to the main story.

There I was, out with friends at a bar drinking. That's when I feel the draw. A different friend smoked. So, I walked out with him when he took a smoke break.

I then walked back in and loudly, as I was already clearly intoxicated, & said I smoked.

I proceeded to talk about how I hated the taste of it and didn't understand why anyone would smoke.

I went back about my business of drinking with friends.

Side Story: Before entering the bar, one of my friends told me a slick way to basically drink almost free all night. What you do is you buy the first round at the bar.

You then spend the rest of the night reminding everyone that you bought the first round which everyone remembers as it was before they were drunk.

He proceeded to do that to us that night. And it worked.

But again, I digress.

I MADE him promise me that he would punch me in the gut as hard as he could if I smoked a cigarette that night. He tried to say no. A lot. But I insisted.

He asked if I was sure as we were going out drinking.

I said yes & he finally relented and said...okay.

So, we go to the bar and start having fun, drinking, goofing around.

While in college before going out, I was starting to feel...the draw to try cigarettes.

I knew it was a bad idea. I knew it had killed my Grandfather, who died of lung cancer, but still. I wanted to try.

So, before going out I talked to my closest friend. This guy was one of my Best Men at my wedding. I told him how I was feeling & made him make me a promise.

Well gather round and here a tale that is far less interesting than I am building it up to be!

I have always liked the smell of cigarettes. Why? Not sure, likely something to do with it reminding me of family as I had a lot of smokers including one of my Grandfathers. But, I digress.
