In reading the Great Basin Kingdom: An Economic History of the Latter-day Saints I can’t help but note the stark contrast between the early church and the attitudes of most American church members today. Collectivism and cooperation were what allowed the church to thrive in the Great Basin and many of these concepts are enshrined as cannon in the Doctrine & Covenants.

Wise environmental stewardship was also an important consideration.

“Regulations were adopted with respect to the conservation of wood and timber: No person was allowed to build with logs without permission; no person was entitled to cut more than he could use quickly; and only dead timber could be used as fuel.”

I admit, I have no control over what goes on in the world, and frankly, I could not care less, but when locals impute the vices of a few individuals to an entire people, that is concerning. It denies one's agency over the self and the self only, condemns one for crimes on a scale no human alone can possibly perpetrate, and worst of all, turns humanity against itself. Once a people have been dealt with, a precedent will have been set, and *you* will be next.
