Today I'm starting my deep dive into the complex topic we've picked for the next episode of Random Encounters: Sexualised violence in (interactive) #Pornography .

Gloria and I always take great care in doing proper research, but in this case it's particularly important, as fictional depictions of sexualised violence have been the source of major controversies and often held responsible for real-world crimes. Most recently, #CollectiveShout made this particular claim — without proving empirical evidence — to deplatform #AdultGames .

Petition Reason
VISA and MASTERCARD control the payment processor market, in a monopoly, that is not regulated in the least. These companies openly dictate access to services, sales, or operations, of legal items, or legal businesses, based on their own political views. Credit Card Processors should only be there to process legal transactions, and not dictate what someone spends their money on. VISA and MASTERCARD are so big and control a market that can be equated to a utility. There are no alternatives widely available in the market, despite these companies acting as a key part of all payment infrastructure. Just like water companies or electricity providers are regulated to prevent them from stopping service based on arbitrary views, VISA and MASTERCARD should be held to the same standard.

Petition Request
We therefore ask the House to open anti-trust investigations and penalize the unregulated monopoly of a key part of everyday infrastructure. Payment processors are not there to regulate what legal content people consume, or to threaten companies who do not agree to the whims of people who run VISA and MASTERCARD. These payment processors should be there to process payments, and regulated like a utility in today's day and age.

In other news: As mentioned previously, Collective Shout tried to have our petition "Save games from censorship" removed, making false claims about "defamatory" statements.

I was forced to spend some time during my vacation to provide evidence for each and every statement, but as we did plenty of research before writing the petition text, I could list numerous sources – including the organisation's own website – and the Change.org Help Center clearly ruled in our favour.

[P] This has Collective Shout in panic mode as some far-right groups are realising they were betrayed by ther own. "Nuh-uh! Not us!" says CS, trying to deny and walk back things they very publically said, which were recorded by a multitude of news sites. So, it'll be interesting to see how this develops. But yes, "freeze peach" means "Say only things I like!" to the far-right, and they often disagree about what they like.

[P] And every time the far-right loses, it only amplifies that pettiness. And there are a lot of occasions where they lost to both furries & LGBTQIA+ alike. I don't know if this petition will actually do anything, but I think religious organizations like Collective Shout are a bunch of the pearl clutching prudes misrepresenting and distracting from very serious real problems with their dumb crusades. If you know someone who was entirely unbothered by the promotion and sale of misogynist, pro-rape video games for years, and is now incredibly offended and turning into an energetic activist once those pro-rape games are removed from sale, regardless of the proclaimed reason, that tells you all you need to know about that person.

I feel ashamed that these people are abusively invoking the #trans and #queer communities to wage their war in favour of literal rape games remaining on sale. That is not my community.

I don't believe a single of the "censorship", "payment processor" or "actually Collective Shout is right-wing" dogwhistle arguments. I could take them seriously if you had fought those games before and only now opposed the cause being hijacked, or something.

Why keep sidestepping the actual issue? Why are you afraid of showing the lists of banned games you want to resume putting on sale? Because it would reflect negatively on you if you had to admit that you're waging a war in favour of games like "Don't Let The Bitch Escape 2: Electric Boogaloo"?

Where was this energy and outrage the entire past couple of years where misogynistic games where the goal is to rape kids and women were sold and celebrated? Where were you? Why are you only using your voice now that they're being removed?

Together with the unfortunately still rampant misogyny in the queer and trans community, this paints a bleak picture. It feels like a lot of people felt more personally attacked here than would be usual.
