2000s: climate change, ecological destruction bad but can be tackled/ a while off/studying this is my contribution
2017-2021: it’s a #ClimateEmergency! We need to act NOW! #Activism
2022-25: it’s a #Polycrisis What will get us first - Climate breakdown? inequality? Fascism? AI dystopia? (Nuclear) war?
2026: Oh, it’s all at once, right now, this is it #CollapseDiary

#ClimateDiary Morning walk to shops seeing debris of storm #Goretti everywhere i was musing all the small ways in which our lives are crumbling, getting harder than they used to be (for some reason pinning this on Woody Allen films, privileged couples casually having dinner together in restaurants as if it’s nothing - that world, always for the few, doesn’t exist any more) - then saw this wall and thought it was apt! #TheCrumble #CollapseDiary

#ClimateDiary 3/3 all this i know is symptomatic of how things are. I wish i could remember who once said that really this is or should be #CollapseDiary - so true! and of course all of this is interrelated anyway. And it’s ok if sometimes climate is a bit more in the background.
Anyway, just wanted to explain why i have been finding it hard to engage with #ClimateDiary again recently!

“Drought is pushing tens of millions of people to the edge of starvation around the world, in a foretaste of a global crisis that is rapidly deepening with climate breakdown.”
Mark Svoboda, the founding director of the US National Drought Mitigation Center (NMDC), and co-author of the report, said:
“This is not a dry spell. This is a slow-moving global catastrophe, the worst I’ve ever seen.”

When I set up #ClimateDiary in Jan 23, it still felt like many in privileged Global North thought everything was fine and normal; like only a minority of us saw the #Polycrisis or #Metacrisis .
By now, we all know, and know that everyone knows, that nothing is fine and normal, and that all these different crisis are connected.
We may not know what to do. But perhaps we can at least connect to those around us (IRL) in truer ways. IDK.

2/2 - democracy, climate, peace - is not even the right question: it will all happen all together, with so much good community and truth and art always there too. That’s what it will be, or in fact is already: we are living it now. And all along, always also incredible small wonders like these dandelions when i had to stop to apply more sunlotion and drink water, along the (loud) A259 on way home.

#ClimateDiary #CollapseDiary yesterday i went to a wonderful, idiosyncratic May day event with poetry, art and music in the South Downs. It made us all feel so connected to each other and the sussex landscape.
But it was also incredibly, incredibly hot: I barely made it home and am still exhausted. Not ‘normal’ for 1st May.
Now waking up to the news that #Reform have won the Runcorn byelection. Making me wonder again about how it’s all going to unfold - what will “go” first 1/2

This piece by Ernesto van Peborgh is more or less where I am at on all this - #RegenerativeAnthropology and all. One particular point I liked: he uses the term #Metacrisis instead of #polycrisis, to capture that it’s all one big crisis. I agree, it’s better. Will use it too from now on
(And yes, it’s on Substack. I didn’t put it there. I am aware Substack is part of the problem. Feel free to just not open it).

F: we were going to Sovereign but we are not anymore
Me: oh, is that because of the storm? good idea (#StormDarragh)
F: no, because it's shutThe Sovereign swimming pool was always a bit grim, but this is the second public swimming pool closing in Eastbourne and now we have none, only private ones.
