  4. It might be a bit ironic that I’ve not posted anything about gaming, given that a) it’s a bit of a Blaugust theme, and b) I co-host a podcast that is at least slightly about gaming. Time to fix that.

I haven’t picked up the Steam Deck for a while (according to my play history, since June), but I’ve been keeping an eye on a number of games on my wishlist, and coming up.

When I got home this evening I ran a couple of system updates, and then looked to see what I had in the queue waiting to be tried. I also wanted to check out the new game recording support on Steam OS. I picked The Collage Atlas, which I’d obviously added to my library back in the spring, but not tried out yet.

WOW – this is just the kind of experience I love. I had literally zero expectations or knowledge about the game (I’d read about it months ago, but forgotten everything), and it is an absolute treat.

The style reminds me slightly of another breathtaking, original game I loved, Blanc – at least in the sense of the hand-drawn black on white graphics. The gameplay is very different. Just for one thing, Blanc can be played solo or co-op, whereas this is a solo experience. It’s a lot less of an action adventure game, but does share some mystery and puzzle elements.

I love the graphics, sound, the calm exploration, and sense of expanse and wonder.

I’ve really been into indie, off-the-beaten-track, artistic games like this one for a while now. I will definitely go for the so-called AAA stuff as well; but this really feels like a quiet, contemplative work of art that I’m experiencing as I work my way through.
