In 2023 Woolworths was one of the most trusted brands. Now it is one of the least trusted. That’s quite a shift in a short time. Consequences? Nothing I can see. #auspol #colesworth

Gentrified groceries ie Colesworth, doing Colesworth things. Coming to an inner-city suburb near you.

Disingenuous maths on woolies' behalf here. I haven't saved $32 in a month by paying for a year's worth of free deliveries. I've saved $8, since I always pick a $2 delivery slot regardless of having a "delivery unlimited" subscription. They use a different number to calculate the service-affirming value they send in the billing emails.
Dodgy.

My local IGA is closing down and turning into a Spudshed. Determined to keep shopping here til the bitter end whenever that is, and it's soon, judging from the emptiness.
Running out of options to avoid Colesworth. Just symbolically got the last pack of toilet paper.

@drrimmer
Well they (Coles) would say that, wouldn’t they? It seems pretty clear what they did. First jacked up prices for a few weeks, then reduced them - BUT NOT back to, or under, the previous price, but above it. 🤔
And if Coles thinks we can’t spot a pattern this blatant… well shareholders: SACK that CEO & save yourselves the money for your dividend that way.😁
While we’re at it, how much money is the Coles Board hoovering up? More savings right there.
Now let’s talk about insider trading… 🤔🙂

If you get grocery deliveries from woolies: There's currently 50% off the free deliveries for a year deal, comes out to AUD$60. I always order our weekly deliveries on Tuesdays to get the $2 rate, so we'll save AUD$40 over the year. Worth it!
Just gotta remember to cancel before it renews without the discount.

dear #Colesworth
thank you for your email asking if i have forgotten something
someone connected to your organisation (and i’m not convinced it’s human) thinks i got half-way through shopping online then forgot the last thing i ordered.
it’s possible i am losing my short-term memory, or can’t work out the steps from scratch, so i’m really grateful for the link to my half-empty shopping cart
of course, it’s also possible my shopping spree was interrupted by something important, or even calamitous, but i appreciate the optimistic tone of your email
in truth, i shop once a week, and it makes more sense to put stuff in my shopping cart than write a list.
i also like to leave the actual checkout stage til the last minute, in case the unthinkable happens and your too-good-to-miss specials (as described to me in regular emails) actually become “currently available”.
as someone without the means to acquire the land and resources to live independently of corporate supply chains, the random chance of success keeps me hooked, and the entertainment value is hard to quantify
yours sincerely,
maude

I'm going with mad laughter as an economic term of expression when I'm at #colesworth

“Justice Nye Perram on Friday ruled Woolworths and Coles failed to comply with their obligation to keep accurate employment records and paid workers their salaries without tracking other entitlements owed under the retail award.”
———
from where i sit (ordering groceries online) it looks like the big 2 treat massive underpayments of workers as standard business practice. this is hardly the first case of its kind involving colesworth.
i haven’t read about this particular case in detail, but i wonder how the companies meet their obligations to the ATO, or meet their duty of care if they don’t keep decent records. i wonder at what point the CEOs/ CFOs should be held accountable, and i’m inclined to think negative things about them personally.
this case is a prize example of why i have no respect for politicians (of any colour) telling people they can succeed if they work hard, or to “just get a job”, or to justify unemployment benefits… the price system is undoubtedly more efficient than alternative systems for organising production and distribution of goods, but it is still an extremely flawed system, and no protection against greed or gross stupidity.
there is no such thing as a “free” market, and anyone who claims otherwise is deluded or a liar

Wow the madness levels at the local #colesworth are pretty high tonight!

I’m pretty sure this just means the cow had a good agent and an accountant.

About once a week I get messages of support for #auscost, and an increasing number of requests for access to the data I'm scraping from #colesworth. I would like to copy the API implementation from another similar project but I haven't yet found the time.
The cost of running #auscost is low, but increasing with its popularity. It would be nice if this side project could stay free to use and be self-sustaining.
Please consider 💲 if you can: https://auscost.com.au

If you have a spare $5, support the striking Woolworths workers. If not, don’t shop at Coles or Woolies if you can. https://chuffed.org/project/117264-emergency-bill-and-food-relief-while-workers-strike-for-safety-at-woolworths-warehouses

Oh Kay then
Woolworths: the coffee we regularly get: was $19/kg, suddenly $31 (the permanent special came off).
Coles: the coffee we regularly get: was $19/kg, suddenly $31 (the permanent special came off).
And not just our preferred "cheap" brand. All the long-term #coffee specials came off in the past few days.
I foresee a lot of #tea in our future.

The pointless waste of money and creation of waste:
“…customers are being charged less for plastic-wrapped fresh produce 73 per cent of the time.
“The audit found potatoes cost customers on average 53 per cent more to buy loose than packaged in plastic.”
