2/2 According to the Daily Mail (ugh I know), the SS did shoot at Allen, missed and hit their own. Allen tripped and fell and that's when they hemmed him up.
Explains why he wasn't killed. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he never fired an actual shot.
