As electronic coin rejectors got more and more popular, plenty of old games, vending machines and other coin operated things could've benefited from the fact that instead of exact change, the user could have paid with whatever coins they had on them provided they had enough to pay for the game/service.
The old machines generally had just a switch to add a credit once a coin passed a mechanical rejector. So how could those things be updated to understand a multi-channel rejector that tried to communicate the coin values to the host machine?
Enter the credit boards. They ran microcontrollers and had removable ROM chips on the board. The board listened to the rejector and once it calculated enough money had been paid, it triggered one pulse to the switch that used to be connected to the old mechanical coin rejector, thus making it possible to pay for example with 5x 20cnt for 1€ product. The pricing was on the ROM chip and changes just needed a new ROM.

I could go back in time and tell my younger self it is possible to play the exact roms as in the arcades on my #Amiga500.
