  1. A few takeaways from CogHum conference:

    * I love it how we no longer need to frame our various interdisciplinary mixes with complex explanations or an apologetic tone. We have a shared discourse now (even though there are various perspectives within it), and people recognise each other's paradigms from just a few cues.

    * Reading as a cognitive action is getting a lot of attention (for obvious reasons), and the dynamics between "naturalness," artifice, tacitness, and skill are relevant to studies of many different kinds of reading and readers.

    * It's true what everyone says: Lisbon seafood is great (esp. compared to some super-bland local meat dishes...).

    * Next year: Stirling! 2027 conference will be hosted by the Centre for the Sciences of Place and Memory.

  2. First time in a long while at the conference series I was part of creating many years ago: Cognitive Furures in the Arts and Humanities. Lisbon is lovely and our dinner last night well guarded.

  3. At the end of May I gave the inaugural lecture as Professor of English Literatures, and the official photos arrived during my holiday.

So I wanted to post a look back to the day: there were 22 of us newly appointed professors across the different faculties, each giving a 20-minute-talk on our latest research. For all the academic pomposity, the whole thing was a lot of fun, and of course the best part was celebrating with colleagues and friends afterwards!

  4. Am ever honored to have my lectio praecursoria, "Technonaturalist Speculative Fiction and Literary Affordance", published in glorious Fafnir - Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research. The dragon has also found a new home at the journal.fi research platform. Come one, come all! fafnir.journal.fi/article/view

  5. It is out in the world! For editors Anna McFarlane and Will Slocombe "what wins the prize for the most unexpected title" for the cyberpunk anniversary issue of Foundation is my new article, "Affectivity of 'Pants Science': Speculative Clothing, Disco Elysium, and Pattern Recognition"!

In the text, I delve into the feedback loop between speculative worlds and their commodification.

    Of interest to #LiteraryStudies #CognitiveLiteraryStudies #AffectStudies #GameStudies #FashionStudies scholars, without forgetting #Cyberpunk #ScienceFiction #RPG #DiscoElysium #WilliamGibson enthusiasts.
