Bruh after working in the service industry I have no idea why cafe AU's are so popular.

I don't read #CoffeeShopAU . The reason being is that... I find it boring and reductive.
Setting is something I love about fandom. Setting is where I really allow myself to get lost in imagination. And to strip away that setting to something as mundane as a service job...
The sense of adventure fades. It's boring.
That said... I can see a place for them as a character study? As a setting to explore character dynamics?
I remember I once read a fanfic where Luke Skywalker was a student struggling to make ends meet working in a coffee shop and Darth Vader was trying to support him as an incredibly out of touch father/Villian/Supreme dictator of evil Starfleet.
But even then there was a really conscious choice to engage with the source materials setting using a space coffee shop.

"- Good job 'Fei, 'Ro's in another space. I totally lost my boyfriend.
- What about you? Not reading the book I gave you?
- Me? Naaah, I'm a streetrat remember? Gotta maintain the reputation."I made this for the gundamwingzine. I just want them to be fine now.

And on THAT note, my favorite Mad Max: Fury Road fic and the only coffee shop AU that somehow manages to be as badass as the original canon.
Mind the tags.
