  3. We watched the Coen brothers remake of True Grit not too long ago as a family. It was my second or third viewing but for everyone else, their first. What a great film and an absolutely stunning score. Carter Burwell is under appreciated IMHO. #film #movies #coenbrothers #soundtrack #music #score

  4. The Review of a Film Few Will Recall the Name of, but boy, what a film! ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ film review

A foot-stomping introduction sets the rhythm for The Rivals of Amziah King, a beautifully crafted Southern tale of community, loyalty, crime… and honey, all with Matthew McConaughey at its folksy, charismatic centre.

As night falls over a small Oklahoma town, Amziah King (McConaughey) pulls his pickup truck into the local burger joint, where friends gather with guitars, fiddle, banjo and drums for an impromptu acoustic jam sesh. Even the local cops can’t resist rocking up for a bit of toe-tapping. The music isn’t merely background noise; it establishes the film’s pulse. If Mumford & Sons is your thing, prepare for some enjoyment here.

The plot wastes little time getting underway, opening with a honey heist that introduces an intriguing mixture of drama, mystery and crime. From there, we’re taken on a winding journey through the Oklahoma countryside, where bees and their honey become a metaphor for the community itself: everyone has a role, everyone is connected, and disturb the hive at your peril.

Our protagonist’s world is further complicated when he is reunited with a former foster child, Kateri, played by Native American actor Angelina LookingGlass, whom Amziah and his late wife once cared for. Their chance reunion eventually draws her back into the honey business — and, perhaps more importantly, gives her a sense of having found home again.

The film gradually reveals its characters and the complicated relationships that bind this community together. One of its most delightful sequences is a pot-luck dinner in the local community hall, where personalities emerge through shared stories, good food and plenty of laughter. McConaughey’s Amziah is the kind of character you could happily listen to spinning yarns all afternoon.

There is plenty of humour, too. A school lockdown caused by a swarm of bees is initially absurdly funny, until the situation reminds us how quickly things can turn dangerous.

Then there’s the town’s kingpin, played with cheek by Kurt Russell. Like the queen bee at the centre of a hive, his influence is everywhere — but underneath the surface lies exploitation, violence and a darker side to the community.

Director Andrew Patterson brings an almost hypnotic beauty to the Oklahoma landscape, with the cinematography here capturing both the majesty of nature and the intricate world of the bees – some of the most underrated species in all of biological study. There are echoes of the Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?, a touch of Quentin Tarantino’s darkly comic violence, and even some Guy Ritchie-style camera flourishes and freeze frames.

Some may argue that The Rivals of Amziah King could have been shorter. One fellow moviegoer even suggested cutting some of the music.

    Hell no.

The music, characters, community and enormous heart are precisely what make this film work. Like a good hive, everything is connected — and it’s best experienced by settling in and letting the whole thing buzz around you.

  6. Having just finished watching Widow's Bay I was reminded of what a great character actor Stephen Root truly is.

His range is incredible, and he is a favourite of the Coen brothers, having appeared in several of their movies: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Ladykillers (2004), No Country for Old Men (2007), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021).

  9. Fargo 30th Anniversary Woodchipper Tribute ❄️🪓

Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of Fargo’s launch in UK cinemas, with the film having had its US launch in March of 1996. Still one of our favourite films, after realising yesterday we had to pay tribute to the Coen brother’s masterpiece.

When it launched, we were still in primary school! With its themes of existential violence and greed, it’s NOT suitable for kids. But we did watch it for the first time around 2001 (ish). Thus, let us celebrate its icy glory.

Fargo’s 30th: Deceit, Snow, and Minnesota Nice

Fargo is a film you could watch multiple times in a day and not grow bored of it. Its brilliance lies in some great writing, the believability of its premise, and some incredible acting.

Stealing the show are Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi. The former plays Marge Gunderson, whose Minnesota Nice persona belies a highly intelligent intellect, which she demonstrates constantly as a police officer.

Then there’s Steve Buscemi’s bumbling, hapless idiot Carl Showalter. A petty criminal hired by William H. Macy’s desperate Jerry Lundegaard to kidnap Lundegaard’s wife. The goal for that is to get a massive ransom from his wife’s wealthy father.

Showalter and his partner in crime Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) make a hell of a mess of it. Just a WARNING here, too, this scene contains quite a lot of violence.

The fallout triggers Gunderson into investigator mode. Closing in on what’s happened and Jerry Lundegaard’s desperation begins to spiral.

Frances McDormand won an Oscar for all this and she was brilliant in the role.

At the start of the film, there’s a brief bit of text saying the film was adapted from a real story. That’s a lie, the Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) made them up to add an extra sense of brutality to proceedings.

Joel Coen directed by himself, but the pair wrote the script. Ethan produced the film.

It’s arguably their best work, although No Country For Old Men (2007) fans would argue otherwise. But there’s no denying Fargo is an infinitely rewatchable masterpiece, its themes prevalent to this day, and every second of it honed to perfection. It is a perfect film from start to finish.

And an often overlooked element is composer Carter Burwell’s fantastic score.

Fargo was a moderate commercial success in 1996. Its $7 million budget resulted in a $60.6 million box office return.

Critical acclaim was everywhere and it received seven Oscar nominations, with McDormand winning Best Actress and the Coens for Best Original Screenplay (it later resulted in a critically acclaimed TV series spinoff, which has run across five seasons from 2014 to 2024.

Sadly, there was no major re-release in UK cinemas to mark the occasion. But you can easily watch the film online across several streaming services. Or buy the Blu-ray/DVD.

Whether it’s been 10, 20, or 30 years since you last watched it, it’s time you return to Brainerd and experience what a woodchipper can be used for.

  20. Over 30 years ago, I watched the Coen Brothers movie The Hudsucker Proxy, and it just didn't hit.

Tonight, after absorbing all of their other movies, I watched it again and it hit! Gloriously camp, a real pantomime. Very glad that SBS showed it again during its focus on the Coen Brothers movies.

  21. With SBS doing a focus on the Coen Brothers movies, I finally got around to watching Hail, Caesar! tonight.

It's a great pisstake on 1950s Hollywood, both a tribute and a send up. A movie lover's giggle, peppered with big name actors and finely crafted with genre references and industry detail.

Maybe not for everyone, but I loved it.

  22. SBS is putting a focus on Coen Brothers movies this month, not the lot but a good few. About the only one I haven't seen is Hail, Caesar! so that'll get a viewing this weekend.

Much love for their collection in general, O Brother in particular. But if you haven't seen A Serious Man yet, catch it while it's passing.

  23. What's extra sad about this (I mean it's a small amount of sad, but still), is that this scene makes the movie poster. This character's back even takes a central role. How cool would it be that you see the movie poster and then you watch the movie and you get to see it's actually Prince. 💜

  28. A SERIOUS MAN - Joel & Ethan Coen (2009) - ★★

A rather enigmatic Coen film, with its moments of madness, but which unsettles the viewer with the feeling of being led down a dead end and jumping from one scene to another, loosely connected.

  29. It's #Comedon Thursday.

This week is the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? Join in and follow the converstion on the #Comedon hashtag.

Next week we follow up with Preston Sturges's Sullivan's Travels, which is where the Coens got their film's title from.

#Comedon happens Thursdays at 6PT/9ET but I like to think there's a little #Comedon inside all of us all the time. We just have to believe in #Comedon to feel it there when we need it most.

    Oh, and also, #Comedon.
