“#Epstein’s approach is resolutely interdisciplinary. He draws on #Jewish studies, #arthistory, #theology, #codicology, and #culturalhistory, as well as analogies from #popularculture. This style extends to the #prose, which blends close #visualanalysis with personal anecdotes, digressions, and moments of #memoir. For some #readers, this intimacy will enhance accessibility, collapsing the gap between #scholar and subject; others may find it distracts from sustained theoretical engagement. The balance between #narrative digression and focused argument is not always even, and the density of #illustration placement can interrupt textual flow. Yet the over-all effect is of a generous teacher guiding readers through a complex #visual and #cultural landscape. People of the Image speaks not only to #scholars of #Jewish #art, but to broader debates in #medieval art history, #religious studies, and visual culture.” ~ review by Sara Offenberg..."

I'm glad finally to be able to share the link to my finished project eManuSkript: https://emanuskript.vercel.app/.
This is a suite of tools for teaching and learning digital #palaeography and #codicology as applied to #western Latin #manuscripts. The website includes 4 multi-use apps, and 4 supporting information packages, as well as a large searchable bibliography. Our code and text is available on GitHub under a CC BY-NC licence.
A few bugs remain but they will be cleared in the next 2 weeks!

Medieval books were crafted from animal skin, repaired by hand, and valued by quality. Even stitched pages reveal hidden histories—so what can imperfections tell us about the past?

Musicologists love antiphons. But a 16th-century prayerbook suggests the real center of gravity in the Divine Office was the psalms. The evidence? Counting drop caps.

For those who wanted to see more pictures of the bible, including some of the older bits, I've added some photos here.

Does anyone on the fediverse know enough #Armenian to translate this page from my family bible?
Also, any religious scholars who might be able to tell me about what's on these pages?
Boosts very welcome so I can reach people in #Scholar and #Codicology circles.
Edit:
Some additional context has been added in replies, but for those wondering about age:
"The oldest leaves I think are 11th century, the majority of the leaves look like 14th-16th century […]"

@histodons OK, clearly there is interest in trying to rebuild something like RetroReveal. What I need from you all is some idea in how you used it with manuscripts (where were not the primary use.)
Especially re: color spaces. You know how RR had those different filters, like RGBW, YQ1Q2, YUV_Y, LSHLab, etc.? Which did you use with MSS, and did you ever customize a color space? Post here or email marksaltveit at gmail. Thanks!

Specifically, the software is ImageJ, created for the US National Institutes of Health, and the Color Transformer plugin by Maria E. Barilla. She has since upgraded that to Color Transormer 2, presumably a better choice.
RetroReveal was mostly used by stamp collectors to work with cancellation stamps; there might be ways to do this better suited to medieval scribes' ink and parchment. #histodons #palaeography #codicology
-
Say, #histodons, is anyone familiar with RetroReveal (RIP), and in particular has anyone tried to recreate it from the underlying open source software?
I'm looking at doing that, but I don't need to reinvent any wheels and am happy to compare notes. @histodons #RetroReveal #palaeography #codicology
If you don't know this tool, it uses image processing techniques to produce pseudo-multispectral images from existing photos. Very useful for reading faded or damaged manuscripts.

@BraveInnovationist
To be fair, #receptiogate is a wild outlier - which is of course why it has drawn so much interest.#codicology and especially #fragmentology are highly collaborative, highly engaged disciplines. They are extremely poor choices for anyone considered a plagiarism-fueled scam, precisely because we read the papers and care what they say.
