  3. "Hawaii’s attempt to restrict firearms in stores, hotels and other business establishments in the state was struck down by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, a ruling that also applies to a similar law in California":

Corrupt Republican Supreme Court justices were likely paid to endanger people in this way. The Supreme Court needs a strong #CodeOfEthics.

  5. The Treasury Department has 90,000+ employees. Samuel Alito, whose corruption tarnishes the Supreme Court, has two children. As a Supreme Court Justice, Samuel Alito should have disclosed his son's employment in relevant cases and recused himself in cases involving his own son.

  7. Rep. Mike Levin: "The Supreme Court is the only court in America with no binding code of conduct. That is completely unacceptable, and it has to change NOW. Congress controls the Power of the Purse, and therefore the Court’s funding. If the Court will not adopt a binding code of conduct with real recusal review on their own, I support withholding their funding until they do."

  9. "Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito, who owns stock in oil companies, may be violating court ethics codes by participating in cases that could benefit big oil, government watchdog groups say. In a Thursday letter, a coalition of watchdog organizations called on the Senate judiciary committee to investigate Alito, the sole supreme court justice with holdings in energy companies":

  11. Chief Justice John Roberts said: “I think people view us as purely political actors, which I don’t think is an accurate understanding of what we do”

Sadly it is a completely accurate understanding of what right wing political hacks on the Supreme Court do, especially when they take away people's rights, including voting rights and abortion rights:

The very corrupt Supreme Court would have more credibility if it would create and enforce a strong #CodeOfEthics. #politics

  13. Willie Ross Jr.: "Clarence Thomas. Here's a man who hates his own race so much, that he slammed shut and cemented closed every affirmative action door he ever used to get to where he's at today. When he dies, they need to study his brain in an effort to make sure no one can ever hate their own race this much ever again."

  15. Jan Crawford, on tainted CBS News, said: "There is a narrative that the Supreme Court is corrupt, that they are in the tank for Trump."

She claimed this is not true and claimed there is no corruption, without her mentioning all of the bribes that billionaires gave to Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito over many years. Jesse Lee wrote that she "is personal friends with the Supreme Court Justices" which explains why she would lie for them. The Supreme Court needs a strong #CodeOfEthics #politics

  17. I was setting up a recurring donation to #propublica and I came across their #CodeofEthics :

This is a remarkable document. Do other journalism orgs publish anything similar? I haven't found anything in (admittedly only) a few minutes of searching. So... why not?

  23. ⬆️ @alexlubertozzi @Nonilex

    >> #SCOTUS #CodeOfEthics differs from federal law by saying a justice “should,” rather than “shall,” disqualify himself or herself

Meanwhile, #Trump is tying up justice in #Georgia by asking for #FaniWillis to step aside in #ElectionInterference case.

    He is not IMPARTIAL.

Why does our system of justice entertain BOTH #Trump & #Alito from BOTH sides — attacking a prosecutor in one case, & protecting a rogue “justice” in the other case — BOTH against public interest?

  24. ⬆️ @alexlubertozzi @Nonilex

    #SupremeCourt #CodeOfEthics is such a sham:

Only an IMPARTIAL and reasonable person who is “aware of ALL relevant circumstances” can VALIDLY call for recusal

A bar so high in the stratosphere that it’s impossible to meet. Not even another #SCOTUS Justice can meet ALL of these requirements — either they might not be IMPARTIAL or they might not be aware of ALL relevant circumstances — failing which, even the call for #recusal is INVALID

But insofar as it’s phrased to imply, perhaps for the first time since this #ethics mess began, that the court is aware of public opinion, it’s a tiptoe in the right direction."

  29. CW: USPol, SCOTUS's "new" code of ethics

The Code of Ethics the Supreme Court just released is not "new"; it's their write-up of the "rules" that they say they've *been following* all along.

They're not saying, "Oops, our bad, we're adopting rules now"; they're saying "Silly public, thinking we have no rules! Here they are."

    IOW, nothing will change.

  33. "The code does NOT [emphasis mine] spell out any enforcement mechanism. It does NOT lay out an oversight process and it remains unclear WHO, IF ANYONE, would determine whether a justice violated a part of the code. Nevertheless, some observers described the creation of an explicit, written code as a landmark in the court’s history."
