The Last Farewell

Den letzten Tag unserer diesjährigen Reise beginnen wir – wie könnte es anders sein – mit einer Fahrt in der Tram zum Circular Quay.

Dort besteigen wir aber nicht eine der vielen Fähre im Sydney Harbour, sondern den Bus der Linie 333 in Richtung Bondi, wo wir nach ca. 45 Minuten Fahrt ankommen. Da wir bislang noch nicht gefrühstückt haben, suchen wir erst einmal ein Café auf, um selbiges zu tun.

Frisch gestärkt beginnen wir dann unsere Wanderung entlang der Pazifikküste. Vor zwei Jahren waren wir von Bondi Beach auch auf dem Küstenwanderweg in Richtung Süden nach Coogee gegangen. Vor vier Jahren, also im August 2022, als wir zu Rebeccas Hochzeit zum ersten Mal in Australien waren, hatten wir Watsons Bay besucht und uns dort umgesehen (damals habe ich keinen Blog geschrieben). Heute ist also der Lückenschluss von Bondi Beach nach Watsons Bay dran.

Der Weg führt zunächst – anders als in südlicher Richtung – nicht direkt am Klippenrand entlang, sondern in North Bondi durch den Ort. Der Grund dafür ist simpel: Dort liegt ein Golfplatz direkt am Kliffrand und man muss ja irgendwie den Pöbel draußen halten, also zäunt man das Gelände ein.

Der Weg führt in North Bondi hoch hinauf und da wir uns auf einer relativ schmalen Landzunge befinden, erhaschen wir zunächst einen Blick in Richtung der Skyline der Stadt.

Irgendwann erreichen wir dann doch die Klippen und können einen ersten Blick auf den Ozean werfen.

Entlang der Küste soll es hier in den Felsen Ritzzeichnungen der Aborigines geben, die sich aber an Stellen befinden, die nicht öffentlich zugänglich sind. Da die Sandsteinfelsen bei der Erbauung der Stadt auch intensiv als Steinbruch genutzt wurden, dürfte einiges davon allein auch dadurch verloren gegangen sein.

Die Tiefblicke von der Höhe der Klippen nach unten auf die Wellen, die gegen die Felsen tosen sind schon recht spektakulär.

Die Wegführung ist durchaus abwechslungsreich. Der Weg führt immer wieder von den Klippen weg und durch die Wohnbebauung. Dadurch ergeben sich auch zur Stadtseite hin schöne Panoramablicke.

Der Bereich, den wir hier durchqueren, heißt Diamond Bay. Der Name gibt einen Hinweis auf den Inhalt der Hosentaschen der Menschen, die sich hier ihre ärmlichen Hütten auf oder sogar über die Klippenkante gebaut haben.

Der Weg ist unterschiedlich gestaltet. Als wir zum Beispiel zuerst den Klippenrand erreichen, geht es weglos über eine Wiese. An anderen Stellen sind Treppenstufen in die Felsen geschlagen oder der Weg führt über Bohlenkonstruktionen an den Felsen entlang.

Schließlich haben wir Watsons Bay erreicht. Wir kommen am Macquarie Leuchtturm vorbei, den wir 2022 mit Victoria schon besucht hatten.

Auf dem weiteren Weg an der Küste entlang folgt dann die ehemalige Signalstation.

Zwei sehr interessante Tafeln am Weg informieren darüber, wie die Küste hier vor 20.000 Jahren ausgesehen hat. Damals lag der Bereich, in dem wir heute unterwegs waren, knapp zehn Kilometer im Landesinneren.

Eigentlich wollten wir den Küstenweg bis zum Hornby Leuchtturm am South Head, also der südlichen Spitze der Öffnung der Bucht zum Pazifik weitergehen. Leider versperrt uns eine Kaserne den Weg entlang der östlichen Seite der Landzunge. Wir müssten also komplett auf die westliche Seite wechseln und den Weg gehen, den wir bereits 2022 gegangen sind. Darauf verzichten wir allerdings und beschließen, zum Fähranleger zu gehen und unsere Wanderung dort zu beenden.

Zum Mittagessen gibt es dann Fish & Chips an einem (uns wohlbekannten) Imbiss direkt auf der Pier in Watsons Bay.

Da der Tag noch lang ist, beschließen wir, noch einen Abstecher zum nördlichen Ende der Bucht nach Manly zu machen. Auch diesen Ort hatten wir 2024 bereits besucht. Wir fahren mit der direkten Fähre eines privaten Anbieters auf die andere Seite der Bucht. In Manly angekommen gehen wir zunächst an die Strandpromenade, setzen uns auf eine Bank und sehen den Surfern zu, die sich hier im Wasser tummeln.

Dann bummeln wir noch ein Stück an der Strandpromenade entlang und durch die Fußgängerzone in Richtung Anleger zurück. Unterwegs trinken wir noch einen Kaffee (in einem wiederum wohlbekannten Eiscafé).

Als wir den Anleger erreichen, erwischen wir gerade noch die verspätete Schnellfähre, die uns zum Circular Quay zurückbringt. Die Fahrt mit der Fähre durch den Sydney Harbour und insbesondere die Ausblicke auf die Harbour Bridge, das Opernhaus und die Skyline des CBD sind für mich immer wieder ein besonderes Erlebnis.

Mit der Tram geht es zum Hotel zurück. Dort wollen die Koffer für die morgige Abreise gepackt werden, bevor wir den Tag langsam ausklingen lassen.

Morgen geht es dann über Singapur und Frankfurt nach Hannover zurück. Abflug in Sydney ist morgen um 15:00 Uhr hiesiger Zeit, also 07:00 Uhr MESZ. In Hannover kommen wir dann hoffentlich planmäßig am Freitag um 10:15 Uhr an. Insgesamt werden wir also über 27 Stunden unterwegs sein.
