From the marsh floor to the best seat in the house: a Willet pauses on a weathered post, scanning the bayside wetlands from above. 🪶
Its mottled plumage stands out against the bright green coastal vegetation.

Luckily, gulls are protected somewhat from the cold by their feathers and this gull stood in the water without a care in the world for several minutes.

The Patient Observer: Greg Urbano’s “Showy Egret” and the Art of Coastal Intimacy
(This post is being modified)
In late summer, young Elegant Terns (Thalasseus elegans) trail their parents on fishing trips, quietly following until a fish is caught—then breaking into loud begging calls. They often drop to the water’s surface to receive their meal before taking off again. Along the California coast, this parent-chick routine can continue well into November.

Alone on the Flats
A distant Black-bellied Plover stood alone on a shimmering mudflat, its quiet presence captured in a soft, spacious frame.

Purple Sandpipers
Purple Sandpipers foraged quietly on barnacle-covered jetty rocks in Cape May, revealing a surprising adaptation to a rugged, wave-splashed habitat.
Marsh Gulls
Three gulls, three very different personalities.
Saltmarsh Shadows
While drifting through the final bends of the saltmarsh aboard the Osprey, I spotted a group of five Boat-tailed Grackles moving low through the reeds near the mouth of Jarvis Sound.
Forster’s Tern Over Cape May Harbour
While scanning the skies above Cape May Harbour, I spotted a slender tern gliding past the boat. At first, I wasn’t sure which species I’d photographed—Caspian, Common, or Forster’s? Back at home, subtle field marks confirmed it was Forster’s Tern in breeding plumage. A life bird. One that taught me to look closer.
The Cormorants of Cape May
During a boat tour through the Cape May saltmarsh, I observed Double-crested Cormorants at rest, in flight, and in that transitional space between water and sky.
Cape May Island Birding by Boat
A spring morning on the saltmarsh, quiet but alive. I joined a small group aboard *The Osprey* for a birding cruise around Cape May Island, camera in hand and eyes open for coastal migrants. It began with a twig and a watchful Osprey, and became a slow, quiet journey into the rhythm of observation.

Egrets are symbolic of purity, strength, balance, concentration, longevity, and piety. Because they tend to enjoy solitude, their spirit also represents freedom and independence. Originally Photographed near Madeira Beach, Florida 2022
