Book Launch: Breaking the Fence
On a glorious summer evening, friends and family gathered to attend the launch of Karen Haase and Julie Martin-Jones’ new book ‘Breaking the Fence’ at Harrogate Railway Football Club. Their first novel ‘Over the Fence’ told the story of Seren and Clarissa, warring neighbours whose series of confrontations, grow increasingly out of control. Their new novel moves the characters from the sedate, leafy avenues of Harrogate to a very different life in Australia but the conflict remains.
Before the launch officially started, Karen and Julie talked to Sue Williams from Books and Beverages about writing their second book together and how the plot developed.
Most authors will read extracts of their books at a launch but Karen and Julie have been extremely fortunate to have two friends who are readers for their audio books. At the launch Jane read the part of Clarissa, the tormenting and tormented neighbour who makes Seren’s life such a misery, and Meg read Seren’s chapters, their voices fitting the characters so well.
As always there were speeches of thanks from both the authors and their publisher but two things stood out for me. Karen’s father was a life long supporter and life member of Harrogate Railway Football Club, which is why Karen chose the venue. A lovely gesture to her father.
Rick who is Karen and Julie’s publisher spoke about promoting their books and intriguingly mentioned how he is in early discussions with two companies about turning the novels into films. The red carpet beckons! The evening finished with a long line of people waiting to get their books signed. It was a lovely evening and I wish Julie and Karen every success with ‘Breaking the Fence’.
