  2. When truth must out: what memoir taught me about story when I couldn’t invent anything

In a novel we are able to invent. And even if we’re drawing on real life, some invention is usually essential because real life will rarely do just as it is (here’s a post I wrote about that). But when I decided to write a memoir (Not Quite Lost) and then another memoir (Turn Right… Continue reading When truth must out: what memoir taught me about story when I couldn’t invent anything…

  3. I'm taking a course on speculative nonfiction and am writing a personal essay for it called On the End: A Beginning. It's about being born into an apocalyptic cult, and I'm having fun writing this. Hope to have the first draft done tomorrow. #AmWriting #SpeculativeNonfiction #CNF

  4. I'm registered for this course on speculative nonfiction. There are three spots left in the class if you'd like to try it out. substack.com/redirect/9c22845e #WritingCommunity #CNF #SpeculativeNonfiction

  5. A story is unfolding in your life? That’s when writers write. Post at Women Writers

You might have seen I have a book coming out. Next week, gosh. It’s a follow-up to my travel memoir Not Quite Lost – a set of humorous Bill Brysonesque tales that also asks serious questions. Some of those questions are unanswerable, but they swim alongside us as we do ordinary life things. They demand… Continue reading A story is unfolding in your life? That’s when writers write. 7. Well, it looks like I'm firing up the ol' coal-powered web log… Before a new piece this month, here's some CNF first published in The Quarantine Review. It's about #adoption, academic travels in northern #BC, and discovering a beloved childhood author was an abuser (it's 1 of 3 pieces on this: a #blog, #CNF, and an #academic #article).

  8. Here is today's blog post, a new happy snapshot, the first in weeks, featuring a picture I took of the Roman Theatre in Orange, France and my emotions hidden within.

  11. Things you should know about The Mad River
    - You don't need a Medium account to submit and be published.
    - If you have a Medium account you can publish behind the paywall (or not if you prefer).
    - The river is fussy, but fair.
    - We love reprints.
    - We nominate for Medium #Boost
    #Submissions are always open.

  12. My family has a lot of physical objects that are important to them. They're different from "heirlooms," (like jewelry or Bibles) in that they're relatively ordinary, and may or may not be passed along to anyone. What they have in common is that they connect to a story or a person. A handful that come to mind:
    - Great-grandpa's '49 Willys
    - Grandpa's briefcase
    - the tree trunk with the crank
    - the gong beds
What are your sacred objects? What are their stories?
