My pitch for next version of the paas my team owned at previous job was migrating to cross plane / byoc+cluster api.

It was shot down as too ambitious and I let that idea die.

I am curious if folks are still using #crossplane or just #clusterAPI to manage the lifecycle of workload clusters.

I think cluster-API would have really profited from a stronger API schema. I get the problem of how different providers underneath are and the intend to accommodate this, but I think the reality with cluster-api is that it now just replicates the upstream APIs and therefore reproduces vendor lock-ins.

Control plane Kubernetes — как сейф с главными ключами. Он управляет кластером, хранит sensitive-информацию и зачастую представляет собой лакомую цель для злоумышленников. В этой статье — разбор того, как спрятать control plane в сервисе Managed Kubernetes, предоставляемом в облаке: зачем это нужно, какие варианты существуют и с какими проблемами мы столкнулись на практике. Рассмотрим несколько open source решений, которые протестировали у себя в поисках надёжного способа изолировать control plane-ноды от пользователя и сделать их недоступными для какого-либо внешнего взаимодействия. Меня зовут Каиржан, я DevOps/Software-инженер в команде разработки MWS Cloud Platform , пишу на Go под Kubernetes и ClusterAPI. Наша команда разрабатывает сервис Managed Kubernetes для публичного облака — от инфраструктуры до собственных провайдеров для ClusterAPI. I feel dirty with the amount of yaml and crd hacks I had to do today to restore a working system after a failed upgrade. At least I know enough to actually fix stuff but *ugh* #kubernetes #clusterapi

I dislike how so many tools add magic without a good opt-out mechanism or even an indication where the magic is added. Ie. using clusterapi and capt (tinkerbell) your control plane nodes get the label "node.kubernetes.io/exclude-from-external-load-balancers", but I have no idea which component adds the label nor how to disable it, as I don't want it for my particular setup.

The cluster-api experiment was a bust. After building the nodes with Terraform, and getting the management cluster online, the BYOH nodes failed to join with an error I can't find anywhere other than the source. Too alpha, will try again in a year...

Would be nice if CAPI had a Proxmox provider but Proxmox tooling support is.... Bad.
