“Websites went from being written for people to being written primarily for search engine crawlers.” @arstechnica
This is a great look back at the history of search, with each "advance" effectively ruined by people gaming the system, shifting the web's #Cluetrain promise of connecting people to a commerce-driven hellscape epitomized by Google's abandoning its original "Don't be evil" motto.
We can still have a better web, but we'll have to fight for it.

Yes, there's a theme here...
So many of y'all think you're becoming Cyborgs when you're actually just batteries.

Have they taken down the #Cluetrain website or is it just not accessible in NZ any more?

VOI isn't a concrete metric that's going to impress non-marketing executives who only understand spreadsheets, but it's an invaluable concept that every experienced marketer should instinctively understand.
It also aligns with one of my favorite #Cluetrain quotes: "Some of these conversations ended in a sale, but don’t let that fool you. The sale was merely the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence."

"I’d rather preserve my independence, but keeping a roof over my head is more important." @baldur
If blogging IS tied to your professional work, it's arguably even more important to get your house in order now. I always appreciate Baldur's candor, and his personal asides bolster his professional credibility.
He's the anti-Godin, and he proves the internet can be a better place.

"It is why I am returning to this blog, renewing my use of RSS, and actively removing myself from a wide swath of the web...
Personal blogging is a key part to building the presence I want." @broximar

"I want somewhere to exist on the net where people can find my personal record. I don’t expect this blog ever to achieve mass readership; it’s a snapshot of the contents of my own brain, and that is a niche interest." @riotnrrd

Flashback: We can have a different web

Why keep blogging in 2025?
If you've known me for a while, you know a #Cluetrain quote is coming!
EDIT: I've added posts from others about their own blogging to this thread. 👇🏽

In which White uses "walled gardens" to give an updated spin on #Cluetrain's "markets are conversations," reminding us that the web can be ours again — if we really want it.

Bayer adopts distributed decision-making, flattening hierarchy, removing internal bureaucracy... Welcome to the #cluetrain [1] https://fortune.com/2024/03/21/bayer-ceo-bill-anderson-corporate-bureaucracy-19th-century-leadership/
[1] Cluetrain is an ancient "manifesto", 25 yrs old a few days ago, written back when the Web Was Good(tm) and privilege had not yet been discovered. https://cluetrain.com

We're back with a new episode! @katherined and @dsearls discuss the #Cluetrain Manifesto on its 25th anniversary, how the world has and hasn't changed since, and about #SCaLE 21x (Southern California Linux Expo) coming up March 14.

@mguhlin Team #Cluetrain! 🎉👊🏽
re: Scout, I read it last year with high hopes but found it awkwardly walked the line between open-minded and both sides-ism, while offering mostly surface-level insights and anecdotes to support its interesting premise. It's not a bad read, but it never quite manages to be a great one.

@harold with federated and decentralised social networks there’s reason to be hopeful again. I still feel that the #cluetrain manifesto holds true.

"This is not a remotely fair deal for those of us on the 'putting stuff up on the web for free' side of the equation. It doesn’t matter whether it’s illegal or not—though legislation is probably the only way to get the tech industry to stop it—because the social contract is broken." @baldur
Baldur's clear-eyed takes on the hype and risks of tech's current fascination with #AI continues. Has the #Cluetrain been derailed? ☹️

If only accounts could earn the awareness and distribution instead of buying it... This was our original discussion/direction when advocating for #SocialMedia growth. The intent was #Cluetrain, not #AdWeek
I started my first internet agency before ATT's banner ad debuted on @WIRED The point then, as now, is PEOPLE. But people do interact with orgs, it should just be on the people's terms, free of unwanted noise. #VRM

"But if your blog doesn't have RSS or Atom, you shoot yourself in the foot.
You completely give up control of your traffic to search engines and social platforms. Along with email newsletters, RSS is among the few options remaining to bloggers for establishing a direct communication channel and relationship with readers. With no gatekeepers." @amoroso 💯

@rpch @dweinberger Yep, I was all about the #ClueTrain Manifesto back then, too.

🤣 this should teach me not to trust even pretty convincing online sources! #Cluetrain 83 on Cluetrain.com SHOULD say
"83. We want you to take 50 million of us as seriously as you take one reporter from The Wall Street Journal."
(what a strange place to put spam 🤔)

"We are waking up and linking to each other. We are watching. But we are not waiting."

For years I said I'd consider paying for Twitter if it offered more control over my experience, but nothing serious ever materialized.
For years I ignored my better judgement and neglected my own blog, prioritizing Twitter instead, even as everything about it got worse every year.
You get what you pay for, though, and I'm enjoying my experience here, so I'm happy to start supporting zirk.us with a monthly contribution. 👍🏽

"Personal stories on personal blogs are historical documents when you think about it. They are primary sources in the annals of history, and when people look back to see what happened during this time in our lives, do you want The New York Times or Washington Post telling your story, or do you want the story told in your own words? " Monique Judge 💯
And make sure you have a damn RSS feed, too!

I love the friction that makes companies think twice about engaging on here, but I'm not sure what the ideal solution is, either.
Should every business host their own instance? Maybe trade organizations will step up and host instances for their members?
It took YEARS for Twitter to become a worthwhile minefield for companies to navigate, and most aren't going to abandon it anytime soon.
Hopefully the #Fediverse evolves to embody the ideals of #Cluetrain and they never find a place here. 🤷
-
For now, I'm not looking to follow many media sources like I used to, focusing more on interesting people and relevant topics.
It helps that most of the media activity here so far is either blind cross-posting from elsewhere — an ineffective strategy every platform eventually discourages, either algorithmically, via negative feedback, or filters — or parked accounts with sporadic activity.
This place is a blank slate in so many ways, I hope we get it right this time.

"We’re at a fork in the road, and it seems like we should be looking to take the other path. The one that is open, not closed. The one that gives us more freedom, not less. The one that pushes the power out to you, the users, rather than the latest billionaire." @mmasnick

@VinCrosbie @DrProf As a '70s reporter/editor, I was happily ignorant of the advt/circ/business/econ side of the newspaper's "Chinese wall."
I wish more newsfolks & educators had listened to you, @dangillmor , @davew & the Cluetrain folks 20+ yrs ago.As a tech writer in the '80s, I was distracted by #hypertext pre-Web; then of course by HTML after '90. And I read the #Cluetrain Manifesto in '99, but still felt ME&M was "somebody else's job," much different skills & training. Mea culpa.
