  1. Amazon delivers countless examples of how algorithmic manipulation can harm the public. For instance, they overcharge school districts and teachers, then try to avoid the blame as if they hadn't created the algorithm. Thus, remember, if you cannot see the source code, your program might serve a different master.

  2. @techlore Not everything has to be made smart and not everything smart has to be connected to a cloud service. It’s not … smart, it’s outright dumb. Like smart locks without a physical key mechanism.

  9. ‘Order from #Amazon’: How #techgiants are storing mass #data for #Israel’s war

    972mag.com/cloud-israeli-army-

The #Israeliarmy is using Amazon’s #cloudservice to store #surveillance information on #Gaza’s population, while procuring further #AI tools from #Google and #Microsoft for #military purposes, an investigation reveals.

  10. What's the best cloud storage? ☁️📦
Welcome to a new little series in which we take a closer look at various cloud storage options. 😊🔍
Google Drive is the most widely used cloud storage service in the world, with over 2 billion users. 🌍📊 It is particularly popular due to its seamless integration with other Google Workspace apps 🏢💼
Of course, #GoogleDrive is also compatible with #Cryptomator.🔒📁

  11. I spent over 4 hours today explaining to #Sony #Support my issue with a corrupt cloud save. Unfortunately my #EldenRing save is no longer loading, 180h and NG++ just broke 😭

I've followed all possible repair instructions to no avail.

I would think the easiest solution would be for Sony to restore an old cloud storage, but even getting someone to report the problem to the appropriate place took me all morning.

In the end, this just shows how poorly thought out the #CloudService is 😒

  12. It is a sad commentary for #iCloud and #Apple and its #cloudservice when I store a couple images in iCloud files on my #iPhone, then go to my #Mac to use them and discover they aren't there. The Mac has no way of telling #Finder, "Hey, stupid. Refresh. Look for my new files that I need NOW!"

No button. No clickable icon. No menu item.

    So what did I do?

On the iPhone, I moved (copied) the image files to #Dropbox. The files instantly up/downloaded to my Mac. Literally, less than 5 seconds.

How much am I paying Apple for 2 TB of storage? Well, too embarrassing; look it up. What I am paying for Dropbox is zilch, nothing, nada, bupkis.

    Stupid, stupid, stupid!

    Epic #fail.

PS: 10 minutes later, the iCloud version is still not showing up on my Mac.

  13. Operating a #CloudService that really respects #privacy is complicated: #GDPR forbids storing personal data (incl. IP addresses) that's not strictly required. Consequently, the website of my @ChronoLink service never logs IP addresses. As all hosters I knew do that, I had to self host. But a separate server is wasteful/cumbersome, and sharing one with the service itself is risky. 😕

As of last Saturday, I have a solution: let statichost.eu/ host it. Thanks @puresick for suggesting them!

  14. @dusnm

¿Porque no los dos? There is nothing inherent to that precludes it be owned by all its users.

These technologies are proven to be powerful and convenient. We can retain that *and* democratise ownership.

We need to dismantle the business models and make illegal their exploitative selling of our attention and data. Then empower providers to compete on real service to those who should own the system: The people whose lives it affects.

  15. SmartDry’s useful laundry sensor to be cloud-bricked next month, because cloud services all die sometime

gadgeteer.co.za/wp-content/upl Cloud server dependence is a recurring problem with smart home devices. Yet another one… which is why it is always absolute first prize to get a device with MQTT or Modbus comms so that you […]
