Каждый раз при создании новой виртуальной машины проходить через ручную установку ОС, разметку дисков, создание пользователей и прокидывание SSH‑ключей — сомнительное удовольствие, забирающее кучу времени. К счастью, в Proxmox VE можно один раз потратить 10 минут, настроить правильный «золотой» шаблон с Cloud‑Init и забыть о рутине, раскатывая свежие ВМ буквально в пару кликов. Но тут есть свои подводные камни: от правильного выбора видеоадаптера до хитростей с расширением дискового пространства через qm import . Как собрать такой идеальный шаблон без лишней боли? With Ducttape it is possible to create a Cloud image using the same description file as your (bootable) containers

Here I have #AlmaLinux 10 with #Tailscale installed, to function as a base image for the infrastructure of Ducttape Infra and SpotSnel.

Fedora CoreOS zapowiada się na system operacyjny pod #selhosting który gdzieś wpisuje się w moje podejście do maszyn wirtualnych, czyli pod ciągłe tworzenie i ich usuwanie.
Udało mi się dostosować moduł #Terraform pod użycie CoreOS w Proxmox i pierwsza VM służy jako #zabbix proxy. #Butane przypomina #cloudinit co bardzo mi się podoba.

A big limitation for #incus coming from #cloudinit: it is impossible to properly merge cloud-config keys between user-data and vendor-data. Even after setting merging rules, the user-data key content will override the vendor-data one.

So e.g. it is impossible to use the `packages:` key in both to install default and instance-specific package.

The bug report exposes that the merging feature of cloud-init is of dubious quality: https://github.com/canonical/cloud-init/issues/6268

This is quite annoying.

First time I noticed #cloudInit it was using a noticeable part of the CPUs...

#RaspberryPi says it's for the first install, and I agree it's useful, a bit better that the old /boot/config.txt. But then it sticks around, why ?

I suspect it caused the recent crashes and/or interferes with my #ansible setup on my older Raspis 2 & 3...

Перед каждой презентацией одна и та же история: собираешь инфраструктуру вручную, молишься богам DevOps и придумываешь отговорки на случай внезапных багов. С DevSecOps особенно весело: мало установить сам продукт, нужен целый зоопарк из GitLab, Kubernetes, сканеров безопасности и систем управления уязвимостями. TL;DR: у ALT Linux отсутствует ova для p11, а тот, что есть в p10 мало того, что здоровенный (1.5G? зачем столько?), так ещё и не работает. Скорее всего это никому, кроме меня не нужно, но кратко запишу что и как на случай, если снова придётся проходить этот квест. Disclamer: я знаю про terraform и packer, они использованы не будут. Причины не технические и выходят за рамки заметки. Я понимаю, что по хорошему стоило бы оформить всё это в скрипт, к сожалению, я этого не сделал. Sad, but true.

If you’re on #nixos and using #cloudinit to configure your networking, don’t also enable DHCP in the NixOS config, or you’ll get some unexpected results, like two IP addresses but neither work. In fact, set DHCP to false.

Hint: use adduser, which is perl wrapper around useradd when working interactively and useradd from scripts, as it is more portable.

(And if you’re setting up a server in an automated fashion, let cloud-init, etc., handle it for you.)

Setting static ip addresses using cloud-init in #ubuntu server 24.04 is a PITA. Yes, I should be using ansible, but this project isn't that mature. I wonder if Debian is doing this. Thanks for listening to an old man shouting at the cloud (-init).

Just what I was looking for yesterday - an example cloud-init file to build Ubuntu 23.10 VMs on VMware, courtesy of VMware's own OSS repo: https://github.com/vmware-samples/packer-examples-for-vsphere/tree/develop/builds/linux/ubuntu/23-10

Previously, the old packer examples I was using attempted to use the pressed file, instead of cloud-init, and the ISO just wasn't working with it. Given how prevalent the pressed examples are, I might write up a blog post for using cloud-init with a minimal example. It's also been a little while since I've posted on my home lab, so that would be good for content.
