  9. Many hours of CAD rework on the Cloud Chamber design over the weekend. Finally got a new test print on overnight, but several dimensions need adjusting as some parts don't quite fit (I think due to ABS shrinking on cooling just a little more than I planned on.

  21. Nat and I assembled the case and cooling plate assembly of the cloud chamber. Initially a quick dry assembly to test the fit. Everything went together but nothing got cool at all. Investigations determined the Peltier plates were just getting very hot so thermal transfer to the water block was not working. Now with a slimmer TPU frame and thermal paste applied throughout we have it cooling down the metal plate. Testing can commence!

  40. @rpimag Father and daughter project to see cosmic background radiation. We are designing and building a cloud chamber. Temperature monitoring is using a RP2040 pico board to read a pair of digital temperature sensors and drive a display. The rest is high power regulators to drive stacks of Peltier plates. This is all the parts laid out to help us design a case for it all.

  44. Woohoo! The board that @Unixbigot sent over works perfectly. I bodged together this esp32 widget for luxurious wifi control of the output voltage.

The next step is to incorporate this into my cloud chamber to help do whatever it is that a 300-500v field does to such a device. Hopefully this will let me see some particle trails! Exciting.

For the last few weeks I've been working on building a cloud chamber. The goal is to detect subatomic particles as they crash through the air in the chamber, leaving visible contrails.

    More to come!
