If a wiper wipes, does a diaper... diape?
It seems the answer is no, baby diapers get their name from diaper weave cloth, also known as "bird's eye" cloth, which is particularly absorbent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaper_%28cloth%29
I couldn't resist ordering some cloth diapers with actual diaper weave, so here is photographic evidence.
