  1. Time to sack off the rental shoes. 💪

La Sportiva Tarantula and Tarantula Boulder are comfy, forgiving first shoes for indoor routes and blocs, with men’s and women’s fits and sticky FriXion rubber.

Our whole Tarantula range is 10% off right now at Inglesport.

  2. One from the "Try hard at White Spider" collection... Been a little broken since Nice; tweaked my elbow when I came back and it's been niggly since, so I've put the try-hard on hold a little. With the elbow complaining less, I figure it's time to apply a little and see. The cave was both a project and test - had had one session at it and struggled transitioning to the wall and also completing the final sequence but found it didn't tweak the elbow too much (no lockoffs!). Tuesday was cave day... Thursday was back to crimpy routes likely to tweak the elbow. Luckily the cave looks like it's up another month for another session, and the route seems doable with a little practice and try-hard. We'll see!

  3. Had a flash go at this one when it was fresh and the route card wasn't up yet and got a little sandbagged. Still, it seemed pretty do-able... The route card now says... "What number is this, Chip?" (<Monkees joke)... Let's see...
With the new, improved, Paul Stoneman on belay.

  4. Is 10 minutes enough time to recover between hard flash attenpts? Probably not, but oh, well! This one was just too tempting, and I was hoping the anecdotal evidence of it being easier wasn't wrong. Was it? Let's find out... Send or not?

Spoiler alert (or is it?): Thanks to Jon Koplin for keeping me alive with a solid catch!

  5. Loving the new @whitespiderclimbing compwall set; nice progression and interestingly different from recent sets. Did all the "easy" ones last week and the wall's mostly been out for other setting when I've been in since, so now it's time to try nearer the top of my flash-grade. This blue has big @gazparry energy (lacking footholds, especially the crux!)... Or maybe @alex_patterson_climbing was just channelling him! 😂 Great route either way!

  6. Back when I was a #dirtbag climber bum, there were no climbing gyms, so this is a new thing to me.

An interesting cultural quirk that I noticed today: strangers don't seem to chat much with each other, cheer each other on, congratulate each other when someone pulls off a hard bouldering move or whatever.

Those things routinely happen on actual crags. At rock climbing areas, even shy little me can easily strike up conversations with people, but the bouldering part of the gym feels like any other gym where everyone is doing their own private thing. The vibe is more "gym" than "climbing."

It is what it is, I guess, but it feels lonely compared to rocks.

  7. I never really post #climbing action shots, despite how much time I spend at the #ClimbingGym. Blue route was a surprisingly awkward 5.10, and the orange was a very soft 5.11 that I would suggest is also a 5.10. On-sighted them both!

Very happy with my progression the last few weeks. Currently able to flash the occasional V5 boulder, though I should mention my gym is notoriously soft on grades.

Planning to finally get #LeadClimbing certified soon. It is time!
