  1. In #Guatemala, #Indigenous women build #ClimateResilience with old and new farming methods

#AncestralKnowledge combined with #climatesmart techniques is boosting #FoodSecurity and increasing family incomes in the #LakeAtitlán region

    Adam Wentworth, July 2, 2026

Excerpt: "The impacts of #ClimateChange on Indigenous communities can often lead to further #environmental damage as farmers are forced to rely on unsustainable practices, such as cutting down trees to clear more land. This can accelerate water scarcity, soil erosion and ultimately food insecurity.

"An ongoing adaptation project led by Natün has sought to reverse these impacts, working with local people to combine modern climate-smart agriculture and ancestral knowledge. The approach involves the use of #DroughtResistant crops, organic pest management and #SoilConservation techniques. This is increasingly recognised as an effective way to strengthen climate resilience.

" 'Our approach is based on soil analysis and the use of locally resilient, endemic tree species, significantly increasing survival rates and ensuring sustainable water availability despite changing rainfall patterns,' Wason explained."

  2. So, this is why I'm growing plants that are Native to #NorthAmerica, but not #Maine. We may not be able to rely on predictable weather and seasons because of #ClimateChange, so we need to think about growing species that can deal with those changes.

    #US - #ClimateSmart #NativePlants for the #Northeast

"Welcome to Climate-Smart Native Plant Tools (C-SNaP Tools)

This website aims to serve #RestorationEcologists, landscape professionals, and #HomeGardeners interested in identifying and locating plants that support #ecosystem function and are likely to persist with #ClimateChange. Our tools focus on the #NortheasternUS from #Kentucky to #Maine with informational resources that may be relevant more broadly. Our work is led by members of the Spatial Ecology Lab at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in collaboration with the Northeast Regional Invasive Species & Climate Change Network with support from the USGS Northeast #ClimateAdaptation Science Center.

    Why native plants?

Native plants, defined as species historically found growing without human intervention in a given location, provide substantial ecological benefits including increasing the abundance of native #birds and #pollinators (learn more here and here). Native plants are also far less likely to cause ecological harm than species introduced from other continents.

    Why climate-smart?

On their own, native species are moving much too slowly to 'keep up' with the rapid pace of climate change (learn more). To build #EcologicalResilience to climate change, ecologists have suggested use of #WarmAdaptedGenotypes over local genotypes and planting warm-adapted plants beyond the margins of their historical ranges."

  11. During the strong #sunshine we #UgandaEcoYouthsNetwork found a smart #ecoFriendly way to keep water in our crops by using dried materials cut from our #banana plantations to cover the soil around our #eggplants this simple #climateSmart method helps the soil stay cool and moist even in dry weather and protects our food from drying out it's how we fight #hiddenHunger through #sustainableFarming and local innovation we never give up because #youthInAg can #stopHunger and build a resilient future.

  12. Ever heard of a windcatcher? Long before modern tech, ancient civilizations cooled their homes using tall towers and pure wind power.

No fans, no electricity—just design brilliance. We’re only now realizing how smart they were.
