  1. "Papua’s tropical glaciers lost 97% of their ice mass between 1980 and 2024, Indonesian researchers found in a study published last month. Four of its six glaciers have completely# disappeared, and they project the final two will be gone by the end of the decade."

  2. @PeterRu
Yes of course - because it would stifle investment if companies were held accountable for lying about the hazards their products cause and continued to market them as perfectly safe for over 50 years since fairly robust data - including by the industry - identified the primary hazard ( more than 100 years after the basic science suggested the hazard. How can we ever make money if we have to be responsible that our products are safe to use as directed? /s

How big are the damages? Just think about:
Extreme drought - for example, deseret.com/environment/2026/0

    Forest fires

    Extreme weather & floods

    Agricultural losses

In short: Big, very big-see eg nature.com/articles/s41586-026

  3. "In the first six months of this year, 14 separate weather-related disasters that each caused at least $1bn in damage hit the US, the Climate Central group has calculated. In total, these events cost $101bn in damages – lost homes, businesses, highways and other infrastructure – a toll higher than any other first half of a year since records on this began in 1980."

  4. "Another opportunity created by climate #attribution science is the potential to quantify the *future* #ClimateDamage of proposed fossil fuel projects.

Just as fossil fuel companies seek to avoid responsibility for #ClimateChange damages caused by historical emissions, companies also work to trivialise the future contributions of new coal, gas, and oil projects when seeking development approvals."

  7. Valencia floods: it will take at least 2-3 weeks to restore the long-distance train connection to Madrid. Heavy damage, 2 collapsed tunnels.
Three regional/commuter train lines are at 'ground zero': 80 km of tracks completely destroyed/disappeared. Not to be restored in the short term.

  8. Citizens Property Insurance Co, created by the Florida Legislature in 2002 as an insurer of last resort, already couldn't handle the tripling of homes it had to insure within 5 years. It was looking for a solution. Then came Helene, and now comes Milton...

  9. @primonatura
Will someone please explain to me why we (global we) cannot afford to take meaningful #ClimateAction, because it costs too much, but we can afford to subsidize #ClimateDamage that will cost us even more money?

Maybe if that $650 Billion was switched to subsidizing #mitigation and #adaptation we'd be better off?

  10. Did you know these risks have been known for many years? What's new is that they are now showing up not as risks, but as actual #ClimateDamage. We could have avoided this; we knew the #ClimateCrisis would hurt us if we didn't reduce #GHG emissions over 30 YEARS ago. (And yet too many governments are reneging on their inadequate commitments, and the #FossilFool companies continue to lie)

  11. Climate injustice:
The rich emit, the poor get hit.

Acapulco is a painful illustration. A luxurious destination for people flying in from far away. And now its poorer inhabitants suffer from a climate-fueled extreme hurricane.

  12. Sometimes it feels like when it comes to #climateChange aversion expenditures, the facet that we can put concrete monetary expenditures to measures is used in a fallacious way to sidestep not looking at the cost of doing nothing. The hypothetical costs are easily ignored - "oh, it won‘t be that bad". The avoidance costs then are just branded extra expenditures and shot down.

  13. Fresh off the web! Here's a new article where I talk about the relationship between digital technologies and climate damage, looking at a selection of works of digital literature (#elit) that expose their entanglement within material networks of mineral extraction and energy consumption... I hope this becomes my new book so let me know what y'all think 🙏

  14. The world’s insurance bill from climate driven natural disasters this year: $115 billion
That’s 42 percent higher than the 10-year average.
That is just the insurance costs, much damage , especially in devloping countries is uninsured. Much property in developed and developing countries is already effectively uninsurable already carrying high climate risk.
