"The lobby’s real product is not doubt about the science. It is comfort about the implications."

"what helps people take in threatening information without retreating from it is not more bad news but support, clear communication and a sense of agency."

"[people] who pair every warning with a credible next step are working with human psychology instead of against it."

"Frame action as protection, not sacrifice... Climate action defends energy security, health, food prices and industrial competitiveness. The side that owns the language of protection wins the psychology."

  3. Once Upon a Forest: A Twig Poet’s Rewilding Journey (18 mins)

As a child, Maria struggled to fit into a conventional life. But the forest—with its gnarled twigs and quiet strength—offered her a path to healing and purpose. Now known as Sweden’s “twig poet,” she transforms nature’s remnants into powerful sculptures and poetry.

She replanted thousands of leaf trees that tried to grow in ditches or under electric lines and wouldn't have had a chance there, and put them in her family's bark-beetle decimated spruce monoculture.

  4. @kimlockhartga The word haunted, yes, perhaps.
But you can't get traumatised by non-existing events ... this is a question of anxiety. #climateAnxiety (future) as a term exists as well as #ecoGrief (experience of past/present).

  5. I Can’t Pretend it Isn’t Happening

I had to share this piece from a wonderful fellow blogger based in Ōtautahi. It makes for heavy reading, but I at least feel a sense of solidarity and feeble hope that there are older generations out there who take the science seriously and want to help, inform and support others.

    Heat, Fires and Floods

In my own backyard, here are a smattering of BBC climate-related headlines:

When Younger You Basically Already Nailed It

There’s no sincere way of giving this post a happy ending, especially not in my jet-lag addled brain right now. Next best thing? Quoting my earlier self, because it’s my blog and I do what I like:

“I have found myself at times tempted by nihilism. While that’s an easy place to exist from, it’s also highly unfulfilling. Furthermore, how can I hope to inspire and empower my future students if I choose to actively disengage from their futures? It is nothing if not hypocritical for me to stand in front of a classroom and tautoko these up and coming change-makers only to go home and tell myself that nothing we do will ever be good enough to avoid what is coming. Even if it is the truth – which is something none of us can objectively know, living in pointlessness is still the most futile thing there is. It is boring, and for what? To stand there on the sidelines and say I told you so? I don’t want to give any of my finite time and energy to the idea that we’re fucked. I’d rather focus on how I can acquire new skills, learn new things and figure out how we navigate the reality that awaits us. I’d rather use my time to make good, to have fun with the people I love, and to count all the beautiful things in my life. Time is fleeting. Papatūānuku owes us nothing, but I owe her my deepest gratitude.”

    – from On Aging, Climate Change and Escaping Nihilism

Arohanui, and happier, less politically charged blogs are just around the corner, I promise! xoxo

  9. Books currently easing my climate dread:

    Rebecca Campbell: Arboreality
(Poetic interwoven stories on the effects of small acts of preservation and joy)

    S0s2: The Little Trashmaid
(Webtoon about mermaids living in a horribly cluttered ocean, and humans who befriend them. Funny and heartwarming)

    Thomas D. Lee: Perilous Times
(Arthurian nights coming back from the dead to save Britain from peril... except this time it's climate change)

  10. What did you do differently during the recent heatwave? I'll go first:

    1. I bought my first pair of 'no-show' sports socks at age 41.
    2. My morning coffee became an iced one.
    3. I built a desk fan out of an old PC case fan.
    4. I undid one more button than usual on my shirt and felt ashamed and exposed.
    5. Bought a bag of ice, felt bad.
    6. Worried about the environment a lot more than I usually do, and that's already a lot.

  15. @angeldruckt

  16. Looking through this live thread on the #heatwave from BBC News, there’s a brief mention on #ClimateAnxiety and El Niño (which isn’t the cause) but no other mention of #ClimateChange. Just lots of images of happy people and animals relaxing in the sun.

  18. Double sided collage about climate anxiety💥

I helped organize a screening of Climate in Therapy at my school (TATI) where climate scientists did group therapy.

I made this art while watching to process the film and my own feelings. I chose the box from anti-nausea ginger for the base because I was thinking about how on the surface (represented by the outside of the box, image 1), I try to cover or lessen my climate anxiety and one way that I reduce my anxiety symptoms in general, is with ginger. Then I added collaged words that relate to those surface level feelings and trying to minimize it.

On the inside/underside of the box is collaged words with all of my deeper feelings that are more hidden and where they come from in regards to climate anxiety.

While these images show the white and green box deconstructed and laid flat, it can also be put back together and then the deeper feelings are even more difficult to access.

  19. "Papa, look! The climate is changing, the sea level is rising, we are drowning!"

But the father, who still understands the laws of nature and the scale of the ocean, looks calmly at the horizon and says:

"No, son. That is not a rising sea level. That is simply the swell."

  20. It's kind of strange to me how I'm mostly going along as if everything is fine, even though from my perspective there are major, global problems that are getting worse: problems like climate change, biodiversity loss, and rise of authoritarian governments. I guess it's hard to make a change, especially when I have to give 100% just to maintain our daily life. But I'm still anxious about our predicament, so I end up spending a lot of time and energy trying to understand, and less on taking actions to address the problems. Both understanding and action are important, but I think I'd benefit from leaning more toward action.

  21. More devastating news from Sri Lanka this time.

The elephants trying to rescue other animals make my heart melt.

I am so much in pain with the suffering I am reading about.

At least today I have a meeting with the other #climatecafes facilitators so I can share my pain with like-minded people.
