Despite decades of growing research output, substantial gaps persist between investigations on the diversity of causes, reflected in data and model insufficiency. These gaps hinder the understanding of the issue and impede the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Many studies have urged to include all identified subsidence processes acting in a single area in an integral framework, for which a complex analysis has not systematically been outlined before. Therefore, [they] focus here on bridging the gaps between various technical research disciplines involved. [They] stress the urgency for an integral approach that combines observations with subsurface information of all known subsidence processes in an area, and [they] appeal for utilizing them in physics-guided data integrations. Eight facts about air conditioning amid an overheated global debate

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (#IPCC) has highlighted this issue, concluding:

“AC may constitute a maladaptation because of its high demands on energy and associated heat emissions, especially in high-density cities.”

Compared to the #US, more people in #Europe live in dense, urban areas. According to Dr Vincent Viguié, a #ClimateChange economist at École des Ponts ParisTech, this could leave Europeans more exposed to heat from AC units. He tells Carbon Brief:

“If you live in a neighbourhood that is not dense, like in a suburban neighbourhood or in the countryside, you don’t care about this…So, once again, there is a key difference between US and European cities.”

The increasing awareness and demand for more investment in #ClimateAdaption although righteous in itself, is a consequence of the utter failure and gross negligence of decision makers and governments to address #climatechange

The more they fail, the more climate adaption is needed, and the more difficult or even impossible adaption will become.

@Laplantgenetics Yes! A few weeks ago i turned on #BBCRadio4 and, by chance, there was a programme about what to do in a #Heatwave and what the #UK overall needs to do for #ClimateAdaption. Good of course but hearing BBC voices talking about this made it all so much more real; brought home that this really is it now. I found this atrangely upsetting and surreal, even after years of campaigning and asking for more media coverage.

Reading this ⬆️ i was wondering how hot it was in #Mecca just now - I don’t really have a sense of “normal” temperatures during the #Hajj or indeed of what kind of #ClimateAdaption or #HeatActionPlans are in place for this already, but it’s made me think more about wider social, cultural impact of #ClimateChange - might events like Hajj or #Juneteenth in #Houston (where rapper #BigPokey may have died of #Heatstroke during performance) become untenable? #ClimateDiary
