    Wednesday, September 2, 2026

"After record-setting temperatures across the country, dangerous summer heat continues to spill into September.

"The number of heat-related deaths in the #PhoenixAZ , area are on track to triple last year’s numbers. And schools, businesses, and events are shutting down across the Midwest from Iowa to Michigan.

  6. With about 16000 deaths, this year's heatwaves were the deadliest natural disaster in Germany for at least the last 100 years (sueddeutsche.de/projekte/artik). The left plot below shows estimates and 95% confidence intervals of heat-associated fatalities per year for Germany published by the Robert Koch Institute (rki.de/DE/Themen/Gesundheit-un). On the right I have plotted rolling 5-year averages of the numbers on the left together with a linear trend. While there is still a lot of variation, the trend is clearly upwards. We started the fire, and now it comes for us.
