"Overlooked Climate Feedback Loops Could Make Global Warming 30% Worse

A new study reveals that warming-induced greenhouse gas emissions are amplifying global temperature rise at an alarming rate.

As humanity pumps the atmosphere full of carbon emissions, rising global temperatures are fueling rampant wildfires, permafrost melt, wetland warming, and other phenomena that produce even more emissions. Scientists know that these feedback loops are exacerbating climate change, but most models fail to account for them. A new study reveals just how dangerous that gap may be.

    (. . .)

Some climate feedbacks, such as the rising amount of water vapor in the atmosphere or the ocean’s diminishing ability to absorb carbon, are relatively well-represented in climate models, according to the new study. However, warming-induced emissions are not.

These emissions stem from the impacts of human-driven warming. Thawing permafrost and warming wetlands release CO2 and methane, while wildfires burn through the carbon stored in forests. These processes, therefore, amplify global warming, and yet they have been largely overlooked.

To determine whether this gap has led scientists to underestimate warming projections and overestimate remaining carbon budgets, researchers used a reduced-complexity climate model to quantify the combined impact of four major feedbacks for both CO2 and methane emissions: permafrost thaw, wildfires, wetlands, and inland waters. Previous research has shown that rising global temperatures increase emissions from each of these sources, but this study appears to be the first major effort to understand how much they amplify global warming.

The findings are staggering. Even if humanity achieved net-zero emissions, greenhouse gas feedbacks could still lead to an additional 0.4 degrees F (0.2 degrees C) of warming by the end of the century. Global emissions are nowhere near net-zero, and if they continue at their current rate, these feedbacks could lead to an additional 0.5 degrees F (0.3 degrees C) of warming by 2100."

In November 2023, Indian investigative news outlet Article 14 published an in-depth report highlighting the crisis facing Himalayan glaciers. Due to global warming, rainfall in Srinagar, Kashmir, fell to just 9.5 millimeters in August, an 87.63 percent drop from the normal 76.8 millimeters. September rainfall was also only 20 millimeters, 73.33 percent below the average of 75 millimeters.

The outlet issued a stark warning: 'Glaciers are shrinking across the Himalayan mountain range, and only scattered patches of white snow remain at the foothills where ice once covered the landscape.'

The suffering of local residents was conveyed in vivid detail. Particularly striking were photographs of the Jhelum River, once fed by melting glacier water, reduced to a dry riverbed. Houseboats that had floated on the Jhelum for more than a century were left stranded on the riverbed, while residents waded into the parched river to catch fish.

'From apple harvests, a major source of local income, to drinking water, electricity supplies and livelihoods, everything has begun to suffer as Himalayan glaciers shrink,' Article 14 reported."

    Dear Senator / Representative:

You must speak out about the politicization of climate change.

The United States just recorded its hottest summer and warmest August in 131 years of record keeping, beating the benchmark set with the 1936 Dust Bowl. In August, Lake Mead reached its lowest water level since it was filled about 90 years ago, as the Colorado River remains over-committed.

Globally, ocean temperatures hit a record high in August, foreshadowing a super El Nino climate pattern.

Meanwhile, this Republican Administration is actively glorifying petroleum products and ignoring alternative energy sources.

The administration’s FY2027 budget request seeks to cut the National Science Foundation budget by 55% and eliminate NOAA’s climate research arm entirely. These requests ignore that Congress rejected similar cuts to FY2026 funding just months ago.

    Please::
-Make it clear that we must acknowledge climate change is real.
-Introduce a bill boosting research related to mitigating climate change.
-Make it clear that the U.S. will honor its Paris Accord agreements.
-Decry this Republican administration’s war on science and love affair with oil.

    Thank you.

  5. The second headline on the #ClimateCrisis is less encouraging - because our business "leaders" and politicians fear making the necessary changes. In spite of knowing HOW to rapidly #ElectrifyEverything, the #LemmingsInCharge are leading us into disaster.

  7. RE: mastodon.social/@greenpeace/11

Like with Covid, our governments don't care if we live or die through a heatwave, just that wealth continues to be extracted from us. We're a resource to be managed....not human beings....and apparently we should be grateful for that.

    A hymn to #technofascism

This article praises #Obama for helping #SiliconValley become the oligarchic behemoth it is and scolds … #Biden for not doing more of the same.

No word, absolutely none, about the people, the cost of living, #democracy, privacy, #surveillance, the #environment, #ClimateCrisis, etc, nothing. Living in a bubble, seeing only the bubble walls, ignoring the whole world out there.
