The Planet: I’m doing a factory reset with an extinction event. Let’s see if I can get it right the next time around.
Some people are like: “The planet is just a rock we’ve mastered and we’ll manage/adapt just fine. We’re not done yet, not by a long shot.
Me [Between a rock and hard place]: I think we should pay attention here.
Polies: Don’t worry we are, we’ve got policies in place.
The 1%: What a bunch of stupid slaves. They think the planet is a living thing. In any case, we’re ready to swat them down before they get too rowdy. We’ve got this.
The Planet: First thing first, let’s boil those frogs, they won’t feel a thing.
#ClimateCrisis be like…
All is not lost… yet. Though we could do without that 1%. WIthout them the polies might become more responsible. As for the planet, we can still heal it (again without that 1% in the way)… there’s a solid pattern here methinks.
/too much gardening, lack of oxygen to the brain rantings…/

A #Virginia school district pioneers #solar and battery #microgrids
#RoanokeVA City Public Schools is building the state’s first solar-plus-storage systems to keep emergency shelters going during #ExtremeWeather and cut down on costs.
By Elizabeth Ouzts
8 September 2026"As #ClimateChange intensifies, communities around the country are looking for ways to better prepare for extreme weather, from ice storms to heat waves. In Roanoke, Virginia, nestled in the #BlueRidgeMountains, that starts with the schools.
"For years, the Roanoke City Public Schools district has been installing #SolarPanels to lower electricity bills, minimize its carbon footprint, and teach students about clean tech. Now, the district is set to be the first in the state to invest in storage, with a solar-and-battery-powered microgrid at each of its two high schools, which double as official #DisasterShelters.
" 'They’ll run on the battery until such time as it’s discharged,' said Jeff Shawver, senior director of school plants for Roanoke City Public Schools. 'Then the diesel generators are cut on. Then, the next day, the sun comes up, and you start charging the battery again. It just keeps the cycle going.'
"Due to be installed by the end of the year, the storage systems will be among just a handful of batteries at school buildings around the country, according to #Generation180 , a national nonprofit headquartered up the interstate in Charlottesville. The dearth of #SustainableMicrogrids at schools is problematic in the wake of natural disaster, since they account for 60% of all FEMA-designated relief shelters in Virginia and half of those nationwide.
" 'Schools are also the hubs where citizens vote, where groups gather, and now increasingly where neighbors need to huddle or seek shelter during emergencies,' said Tish Tablan, senior program director at the nonprofit and a former teacher. 'So they’re just critical parts of our communities.'
"The microgrid is funded partially by a grant from the state’s Department of Emergency Management and a donation from commercial solar installer Secure Solar Futures. 'The grant has been around for a few years,' Tablan said. 'They are the first to utilize it for a solar microgrid instead of diesel.' "

Lessons in #Resilience: Libraries’ Roles in #DisasterPreparedness and Recovery | #ClimateCrisis
by Denise Lyons, Apr 01, 2025
"The vital role libraries play in their communities has been well documented, yet many libraries are overlooked, and certainly underfunded, for their significant involvement in disaster preparedness and recovery. A small team (of which I am a part) has dedicated 10 years to researching the value of libraries through disasters, highlighting clear demonstrations of leadership as seen most recently following the devastating wildfires in #LosAngeles and the flooding in #NorthCarolina from Hurricane Helene. Each new disaster brings focus to the urgency around recognizing libraries as key #ClimateResiliency partners. To that end, academics, practitioners, educators, and other leaders have created a body of work to help share stories that raise awareness."

Webinar: A #LibraryOfThings for Disaster Response
Thursday, September 24, 2026
1:00pm–2:00pm"Learn how #BrazoriaCounty Library System ( #BCLS ) in #Texas transformed its 'Library of Things' into a disaster response asset that directly supports community needs before, during, and after major disruptions. This webinar will explain how readiness planning and intentional selection helped expand access to essential tools during emergencies, strengthening recovery efforts and reinforcing the library's role as a trusted, practical community institution. Library Director #LisaLoranc will share how the BCLS integrated the Library of Things planning and acquisition into core library strategy — rather than treating it as an add-on — and how partnerships and a community-centered services model helped her library counter book banning narratives by emphasizing libraries as hubs for equitable access."

How a “ #LibraryOfThings ” Became an Emergency Response Plan
During her tenure as Director of the #Brazoria County Library System, #LisaLoranc has introduced a variety of new programs and resources to her community. One of those offerings is a 'Library of Things,' which gives patrons the ability to access more than just books and media. What started out as a way for people to check out useful items that they might need but not own, soon evolved into an emergency response plan.
LDN Staff / June 20, 2025
Excerpt: "Brazoria County is one of those places in Texas that is vulnerable to a wide variety of natural disasters, so it was only a matter of time before the community might need some help. 'Hurricanes, ice storms, flooding, heat waves… anything can hit Brazoria,' Loranc said.
"An Emergency Response Plan Emerged
"There were obvious needs in the community and Loranc saw an opportunity to help fill them. 'We can have shop vacs, carpet cleaners, fans, moisture sensors… These are things people might need during a natural disaster, but probably don’t own or have access to… and in the middle of a disaster, that’s the worst time to go out and try and buy one.'
"But then, another problem arose. It became apparent that, even if you have these items available at the library, the community might not be able to get to them during a disaster. 'Libraries might also be shut down so we needed to be mobile,' Loranc said, 'We needed the ability to respond quickly during a natural disaster.'
"After that, the planning became much more intentional. She started thinking about how to support a satellite location. 'Assuming that we aren’t going to be in a building with A/C and Wifi, we are definitely going to need hotspots, chargers, generators. We’ll need power. We’ll need a canopy.'
"After she put the infrastructure in place, it was time to do outreach and create partnerships. Loranc started talking to city and county departments, including the Brazoria County Emergency Management Office. What she thought would work at the time was to deploy to their emergency locations, but she was quickly shut down by those departments. Though #BrazoriaCounty libraries act as 'cooling centers' during heat waves, the last thing they wanted was for the public to converge on the libraries in other emergency situations.
"So, she adjusted her plan and started building relationships with businesses and churches to use their parking lots as distribution centers. 'We talked to the Red Cross to find out where they would already have emergency shelters. We wanted to provide whatever they would need to get back into their homes faster.'
"Those items included shop vacs to deal with flooded spaces and high-speed fans to dry out wet interiors. The library can also provide portable generators to charge devices and hotspots for anyone without internet access. Using library vehicles, Loranc and her staff can deploy to multiple locations and provide the community with the items they need for almost any emergency situation. Her 'Library of Things' is now a crucial part of the county emergency response plan and poised to make a huge difference if disaster strikes Brazoria County."

This may not mean much to some people, but it's utterly terrifying.
The oceans are belching up just some of the countless Hiroshima bombs worth of excess anthropogenic heating they've absorbed, into an atmosphere already hotter than humans have ever experienced.
Join the dots...
