Three years ago, an illegally constructed #logging bridge across the Highwood River in #Alberta sparked one of the largest grassroots campaigns to protect the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky #Mountains in recent history.

Today, the proposed #clearcut, covering the equivalent of 1,500 soccer fields, is before the Federal Court, and recent #flooding may have changed the clearcut's future.

“Here is a clear and simple breakdown of some of the latest bombshell findings out of the UBC Hydrology Lab… using a probabilistic framework, known as attribution science in the climate world. [The researchers] studied two watersheds in BC's Okanagan Valley near Summerland. In this area, they found that climate change was actually making the frequency of floods go down, but forest harvesting counteracted the effects of climate change and increased the flood risk by 10-fold (!!!) turning a 20-year flood into a flood that occurs every two years. Received wisdom in #Silviculture is that #Clearfell or #Clearcut coupes mimic nature in #fireclimax habitats. While I agree clearcut / restock can be brutal & we are heavily over-reliant on the system, it seems 'bold' to outlaw it entirely, regardless of scale. Surely local production and 'better' rather than 'less' silviculture would provide #timber for less #carbon intensive #building solutions

This is part of the #SanJuanRiver & forests in the valley. The #watershed area is under ongoing #ecological threats by industrial #clearcut #logging. This is near #CarmannahWalbran #BritishColumbia provincial park.
The forests here are longtime foraging, mating & birthing grounds for the #CowichanValley Roosevelt elk herd. The San Juan is an important salmon bearing river. The old growth forests here are home to several #SpeciesAtRisk & #EndangeredSpecies.
There is ongoing eco activism work to try & protect more of the forests & #waterways in this #wilderness valley on Southern #VancouverIsland.
