  1. New blog post! 🏳️‍🌈

I ported @foone's VGAPride, a lovely, MS-DOS program whose whole job is drawing pride flags — to run natively on Mac OS 9 on PowerPC.

The flags turned out to be *data*, not code, so most of the port was one wee QuickDraw shim. Built with Retro68, complete with a flag selector, and it runs on my actual G3 iBook. Alice's sunglasses-wearing crab made it across intact. 🦀

  6. RE: mastodon.social/@keyboards/116

A pretty clean keyboard layout... but having Return and Enter separate is quite interesting. Does pressing one or the other guarantee a newline in fields where pressing Return "submits"? #ClassicMacOS #retrocomputing

  10. @rl_dane If I wanted to make an OS, what would you think I should use as a basis for a UI?
Do you have a link to an emulator of your favorite OS, UI-wise? I know there's that one Mac OS X system you harp on, but that's probably a bit complicated.
Every time I spend some time playing around with #ClassicMacOS , I end up refreshed (thanks for the System 1.0 link above). Elegant.

  14. @wyatt Apple II, Apple IIGS, and Macintosh stuff pre-OS X also uses carriage return ($0D) as a newline.

  19. I’m not a fan of self-boosting, but I realised I was remiss in not putting some hashtags on this post after it started gaining the small amount of traction it has.

For those who boosted or liked the original, I’m not asking or expecting a repeat. I just hope with these hashtags it gets a little more traction to acknowledge the genius of #BillAtkinson, who affected so many lives through the genius work he did.

I know he impacted many aspects of my life through the work he did on the Mac, the original System, and MacPaint, and it seems many others were similarly impacted.

It’s been truly inspiring for me to see Mac legends talk how he put the lie to the saying “Never meet your heroes”, as he seemed to have been a hero to many, and never a disappointment in person.

    RIP, Bill. :alogo6:

  28. Writing a QuickDraw decoder gave me some ideas on how to generate compact Pict images. This could be useful when small programs are desirable, like when they are stored in a ROM chip. #retrocomputing #classicmac #classicmacos #quickdraw #quicktime #imageprocessing wiesmann.codiferes.net/wordpre

  33. Couple years ago I recreated Classic Mac OS progress and indeterminate progress bars with Core Animation. I really need to find a project to use them in! 😁

Also, the barber pole style indeterminate progress bars were just sooooo “Macintosh.”

I hope everyone has a great day except the person who decided to remove them from modern macOS. Ugh.

  38. I'm now trying to handle pretty obscure QuickDraw features, which include QuickDraw comments. Many reference Technote #27 “MacDraw's PICT File Format”. Problem is, all copies I found on the web say this is now in the Claris documentation and I cannot find any trace of that one… #quickdraw #classicmacos #itarcheology #retrocomputing
