モーツァルトとは10歳ほど年齢差がある。モーツァルトが未完成で遺した「レクイエム」の補筆完成を妻のコンスタンツェから委託されたことで名が残っている。なお、以前はモーツァルトの「弟子」とされていたが、最近は否定する見方が優勢。
他にホルン協奏曲のロンドK.514の補筆も手掛けている。
晩年は結核に冒されていた。没後はモーツァルトと同じ、サンクト・マルクス墓地に葬られた。モーツァルト同様墓碑はない。

向こう数日際立ったクラシックの音楽家の誕生日や命日がないのよねぇ。で、ちょっと探してたらこれが。
メルカダンテ、クラリネットやフルートのための協奏曲をいくつか書いていて、管楽器のソリストにとっては貴重なレパートリーにはなっているんだけど、そういうのを積極的に掘り起こしてないとまずお目に掛かることがない人なんだよなぁ。時期的にはベートーヴェンよりちょっと後、ロマン派の時期に生きた人ってことになるけど、演奏されている作品はむしろ古典派の作風という印象だなぁ。
