    By Clive Paget

Royal Albert Hall, LondonGwilym Simcock’s concerto – written for Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Ben Goldscheider and Jess Gillam (cello, horn and sax) – had problems of balance but at its best was a riot of colours and energy

  5. ‘Will I screw this up?’ How I played timpani for the Philharmonia Orchestra – with no drumming experience
    By Tim Jonze

He hasn’t seen the score and can’t actually play his instrument. But with the help of a virtual headset, our writer joins the revered orchestra for the rollicking finale of Rossini’s William Tell Overture

  6. Today was a very good day! In the morning my new dulcian and I made our debut playing for other people in a church service. A motet by Orlando di Lassso, I had the bass part, other voices were singers. Our choir director was pleased so I'm hoping this opportunity will repeat itself.

After that traveled to the Hague for a dulcian lesson , to show my new instrument and to return the loaner dulcian I had had from my teacher. Very good lesson and he was also pleased by my new instrument.

On the way back, found a fruit ice cream that I actually can eat (lots of food sensitivities). Perfect way to celebrate!

Plan for the rest of the evening is to listen to the final live stream of the Utrecht Early Music Festival. Tallis' Spem in Alium, it would probably be more impressive live, but the concert is sold out.

    By Clive Paget

Royal Albert Hall, LondonSmartly programmed Prom included a nimble rendition of Britten’s Violin Concerto, the visionary masterpiece that is Vaughan Williams’s Ninth, and the world premiere of Carmel Smickersgill’s A Brick Thrown With Love

  8. On deck on a beautiful Saturday evening digging into some of the CDs I have “inherited” from my mother who’s been sorting through my late father’s things as preparations continue to sell the house the folks bought in July of 1972 (where I spent my “formative years”) and my mom, at a spry nearly 89 years old, is on a list for senior living. End of life shit sucks. Still, can’t really go wrong with Franz Josef Haydn.

  11. I'm having a brain glitch: what do you call a classically trained "operatic" soprano whose career is more in concert work - oratorio, choral solos, art song / lieder, recitals, etc ?? I want to just say "concert soprano" but is that going to translate to the illiterate masses?
