“Britain’s former PM shows there’s no price to be paid for engineering mass slaughter in the service of western empire. Which is why those crimes not only continue, but grow in scale”

  2. Fun fact

Guess who has also used #Durant to mourn the collapse of #Christian moral order and “dysfunctional” progressive education.

The National Association of Scholars is a conservative academic organization. See Reddit post: There is an organization called National Association of Scholars (NAS) specifically to sound like the National Academy of Science, but they are in fact a right-wing think-tank just interested in promoting science denial reddit.com/r/skeptic/comments/

  3. #Israel v #Sparta

#Netanyahu’s citation of Will Durant equating Christ and Genghis Khan as historical equals was a deliberate articulation of a political philosophy: raw power supersedes ethics, moral frameworks are obstacles to “necessary” action, and the victor gets to define what counts as legitimate.

Netanyahu not only forgot about the universal Judeo-Christian values we’ve been forced to accept as morally superior, he also forgets he is a wanted war criminal facing #genocide charges.

The sharpest response I’ve read to his morally bankrupt analysis comes from Ihsan al-Faqih, a Jordanian writer:

[…] “What escaped Netanyahu in this unjust comparison is that Genghis Khan’s empire has vanished, becoming a relic of the past, while the ethics of Christ have endured, transcending time.”

Genghis Khan’s empire is dust, while Christ’s ethical legacy persists, however distorted by evangelists and neo-crusaders in the #US and beyond.

  4. CW: "New antisemitism" 🧵

In 1967, the State of Israel attacked Egypt. Already, it was referred to as a ‘pre-emptive strike’. Since then, the Jewish State has occupied Sinai, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. (see map)
For three centuries, this war has been the only one to bear the name of its duration: the ‘Six-Day War’, a name that glorifies the military impact (of the Zionist Sparta).
In 1968, several French intellectuals drew a link between the Six-Day War, anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is an organisation that supports the Israeli government and fights against diversity. In 1974, Arnold Forster and Benjamin Epstein of the ADL published a book entitled ‘The New anti-Semitism’, expressing their concerns about :
    - an indifference to the fears of ‘the Jewish people’,
    - apathy in dealing with prejudice against Jews,
    - an inability to understand the importance of Israel for the survival of the ‘Jewish people’ (in their view).
Hence controversy in the United States (among professionals in public debate).
Later, Allan Brownfeld wrote that Forster and Epstein's definition of anti-Semitism trivialised the concept by turning it into ‘a form of political blackmail’ and ‘a weapon to silence any form of criticism of Israel or of US policy in the Middle East’ (in ‘Anti-Semitism: Its Changing Meaning’, Journal of Palestine Studies, vol. 16, no 3 (Spring, 1987), pp. 53-67).

  9. Alex Karp (#Palantir) / Israel’s biggest supporter in the world: "I want to shame those who are not speaking up."

[…] Karp's support for Israel is not surprising, and possibly even beneficial, for Palantir in the Israeli market. Palantir has a office in Tel Aviv, which is home to many government agencies and security organizations that are potential clients. By positioning itself as an advocate for Israel, Palantir can differentiate itself from its competitors and attract more business. "The advantage of Israel is its ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies," Karp said. "Our products know how to give the best response possible in such situations. I am confident that in the near future, we will have more to say about the things that Palantir has done for Israel."

    Hebrew (The Marker) archive.is/lnFPc

    Elsewhere (Bloomberg) archive.is/d9Jho

[…] If the West didn’t have “real adversaries,” Karp said he’d be one of the people trying to contain #AI’s use in the military. “But the reality of our life now, as #Israel knows, is our adversaries are real, dangerous and they go so far outside the norms of behavior.

Apparently on going occupation, #ethnocide and #domicide, are within the “norms of behavior”.

Alex Karp is the son of a Jewish immigrant who came to the United States in the 1960s. Palantir is a software company that specializes in data integration and analytics. The company has been involved in several high-profile projects, including working with the US Department of Defense and the #FBI, and faced criticism for its ties to law enforcement and surveillance activities. Palantir has been involved in some controversial projects related to immigration and national security.

  13. #FareedZakaria on the guy that used "shorthand" math-like equations to "show" South Africa as a "satisfied society."

  14. #SBL Council Statement Concerning the Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza And Israel

    ----------

The Society of Biblical Literature’s Council is saddened and horrified by the ongoing humanitarian crisis and human rights violations unfolding in #Israel and Gaza. Of particular concern are the ongoing violence, loss of innocent life, and deprivation of basic shelter, safety, food, water, electricity, medical supplies and other life essentials currently experienced by innocent victims in #Gaza.

    sbl-site.org/assets/pdfs/counc

    -------------

This humanist expression of concern (and responsibility) by the SBL is not going down very well in academic circles in #Israel.

Vered Noam [professor of Talmud at Tel Aviv University, who used to live in Kfar Adumim, in the occupied West Bank] said in respect to a petition she signed with 400 other scholars:

"The SBL statement creates an outrageous equivalence between barbarism and civilization; between a society that cherishes life and a culture that sanctifies death; between vile murderers and rapists and defenders of their people and country; between a state that nurtures thriving settlements, scientific research, medicine and technology and a regime that produces only oppression, destruction, terror and bereavement... The SBL has failed to distinguish between good and evil."
