I know this may sound like bragging—I am a traditionally published author—but I do see it as a realization that I'm growing old and there are things I want to accomplish in the world with the bounty I've earned. Paying it forward? Because I can? Because helping establish a new generation of writers is something that makes me feel validated, happy, and proud? I'm not apologizing. I funded a full-boat scholarship for gender fiction writers at the #Clarion West workshop (a six week residency for SF, fantasy, and horror) last year and will continue to do so.
