March 15, 1963 - Students from South Carolina State and Claflin College organized to integrate the lunch counter at Kress' 5 & 10 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Though their efforts were disciplined and peaceful, 400 were attacked by police then herded behind fences in the largest mass arrest of the civil rights movement.
Convicted of "Breach of the Peace," the U.S. Supreme Court later overturned those convictions because those arrested were petitioning for redress of grievances within the protection of the 1st Amendment.
