I was checking all the vice-presidential candidates and was reminded of Brazil’s small parties on the left: PSTU, PCB, PCO and UP.
I’d never realized so clearly before how, despite their differences, these parties tend to occupy the more radical end of the political spectrum.
It made me wonder whether this says something about Brazil’s democratic tradition. Could the historical fragility of our democratic institutions, and our relatively limited exposure to democratic political traditions, also be reflected in the difficulty that more moderate political forces face in organizing themselves, either outside the major parties or within civil society?
