  1. Hype for the Future 79N: Melbourne 🇦🇺 and Sydney 🇦🇺 Compared

Introduction The two largest cities in Australia have largely created a historic rivalry from the earliest days of British colonization as a predominantly penal colony in the modern nation of Australia. When most of the region was part of New South Wales, the penal colony had largely determined the communities of Melbourne (in present-day Victoria) and Sydney (remaining with the State of New South Wales). As the two cities have effectively always been relatively close in population, the City […]

  3. City of Sydney Council News: This World Bicycle Day we look in the archives to explore how Sydney developed a love for cycling from the 19th century onwards.

Sydney was an early pioneer in the world of cycling, with bicycles and velocipedes zooming along city streets as early as the 1860s.

  4. "City and state should join forces to give Sydney the public square it deserves " - Sydney Morning Herald

SMH editorial comes out in favour of a town Square for Sydney’s CBD.

    > Central Sydney has many great things going for it – the harbour, Hyde Park, the new-look George Street and fresh energy – but what it still lacks is a proper meeting place; a public square.

  5. More context on why the Greens member for Balmain opposed the continuous footpath crossings and footpath widening on St Johns Road, Glebe, Sydney: aus.social/@jakecoppinger/1099

I wrote to Jamie Parker (Greens Member for Balmain (State Gov)) and he assured me that Bill's disagreement with the proposal was that extended widening of the footpath would "reduce space available for existing cyclists and would also mitigate opportunities for dedicated cycleways in the future." (info shared with permission).

Jamie said he knew that the project would get support to proceed (as the required majority supported it) but still felt he needed to make a clear statement about cycling issues if they arise on the agenda in future.

He emphasized his representatives on the various committees he has a vote on are always focused on minimising car use, prioritising pedestrian and bike movements, with an objective to maximise active transport opportunities where ever they arise.

I'm appreciative of their quick and candid response! It's frustrating this context is not accessible from the meeting minutes.

  6. Some outcomes from the City of Sydney Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee (it's a mouthful!) on the 16th of Feb:

    - Contra-flow cycling will be newly legal & signposted on 158 one-way streets across the City of Sydney 🎉 meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

    - The Representative for the Member for Balmain (held by Jamie Parker/Greens) voted against the installation of at least 8 continuous footpath crossings and footpath widening along St Johns Road, Glebe. One car park would be lost. There was still a majority so it was approved. Edit: more context: aus.social/@jakecoppinger/1099 (meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.)

    - Two electric parking spaces will be added on St Johns Road (Glebe), only permitting cars to be parked when they are charging: meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

    - A kerb extension will be added on Marriott St (Redfern) just north of Cooper Street, which will create a safer pedestrian crossing: meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

If you have more context/thoughts on these I'm curious to hear.

  7. The City of Sydney local pedestrian, cycling and traffic committee will vote on the 16th of February whether to make 158 one way streets legal for contraflow cycling (in the opposite direction of cars). This would provide a useful network of low traffic cycling routes complimentary to the necessary separated infrastructure.

The criteria for selecting the one way streets is:
    - sight distance free of obstructions;
    - traffic volumes and vehicles speeds are low; and
    - road geometry does not present an unacceptable risk

759 submissions were received from 337 individuals and 4 community and bike user groups with 579 responses supporting the proposal, 18 providing neutral feedback and 172 opposing. See the comments and summaries at meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

  8. Max Bo, a software engineer at Canva, wrote this brilliant analysis of how many #QMS advertising panels are next to a #Telstra payphone in Sydney using #OpenStreetMap data!

Of the 143 QMS panels, 61 (43%) are less than 7 meters away from a telephone.
