I'm personally ambivalent about the #CityofCulture bid for #Ipswich #Suffolk #England - its not a bad thing by any means and even the Tories and Reform aren't criticising it, but at same time the Council and other authorities need to address such issues as #crime, #inequality and #environment #pollution, and #transport preferably *before* we try and encourage even more casual visitors (many of whom are still likely to be arriving in #cars ) into a relatively small physical space in town, which is at present (especially at night) very male-dominated with high levels of #alcohol use as part of "culture".

Or else it could all end quite badly...

Meanwhile Blackpool has made it to the last nine in a bid to become UK City of Culture 2029.

Winning would be an opportunity for Blackpool to both galvanise its local cultural sector (and population) but also be a major turnaround in its profile in British political society.

Whether it will win is another issue; but getting this far is great news for the often criticised (large) town.
