The #CityNatureChallenge is still in full swing. While the four days of observing have passed, everyone's now uploading photos and identifying the species in all the observations, The closing date is 10 May.
Globally the CNC has already topped 2.6 million observations. Here in Aotearoa-NZ 1,715 people have so far uploaded 54,265 observations of 4,494 species, with Wellington currently our leading city.
If you took any nature photos between Friday and Monday, 24–27 April, there's still time to upload them to #iNaturalist and have them count towards the challenge.
Me, I've just finished geotagging all my photos in #darktable using my GPS tracks and need to do some photo cropping before I start uploading batches of photos to the iNaturalist website.
The event is a long way from over. 🙂

Sun has been out, things are melting much faster than anticipated, and it’s even warmed up enough for a few bugs to be around. Feeling much better

On Sunday 26 April, I'll be leading another nature walk in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, this time from the Sign of the Takahe to the Botanic Gardens. That's part of the four-day City Nature Challenge.
It's a terrific walk designed to take us through many of the city's nature filled nooks and crannies.
Again, all welcome. We leave from the Sign of the Takahe (by the bus stop for the No 1 Cashmere bus) at 9:45 am.
If you don't have the time to commit to the full walk, you can join us for the first part walking to the South Library, or from the South Library to the Art Gallery, or for the final stint from the Art Gallery to the Botanic Gardens.
Below are some photos from the previous two years we've done this walk.

During the City Nature Challenge last weekend we organised bike field trips here in the coastal Amazon region with our students. One of them photographed a native gymnosperm, a species of Gnetum. These are frequently not recognized as such — at first glance, they look like any angiosperm liana, especially in sterile conditions. However, the swollen nodes of the seed-bearing strobili give them away when examining more closely.

What I enjoy especially about the City Nature Challenge is the opportunity to have a closer look at the living beings that are not on my "normal" to-do list. However, I definitely can do without those mosquito bites ...

In little more than a week starts the 10th City Nature Challenge (https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/). Bragança here in the coastal zone of the Amazon region will participate for the first time ... Teachers of the local schools are collaborating, starting to train their students to use the iNaturalist app. I hope we can kindle some enthusiasm about observing nature!

Here are some of the many (554) species we found on last year's Takahē to Tāone Hīkoi for the #CityNatureChallenge in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ.
You'd be most welcome to join us if you'd like to be part of the adventure this year (Sunday 27 April).

Wellington’s slim lead over Christchurch in the #CityNatureChallenge is now down to just **210 observations**. I expect we’ll see some back and forth out at front through the day.
If you took photos of wild species between Friday and Monday and haven’t uploaded then to #iNaturalist yet, you’ve got until the end of Sunday for them to count for the #CNC2024.
-
If you're not watching the #CityNatureChallenge in Aotearoa, things are heating up! We've got until the end of Sunday to upload all our observations and get all our species IDs completed.
Wellington burst out to a lead of over 2,000 observations during the four days of observing, but Christchurch has been steadily chasing them down. Wellington's only 535 observations ahead now.
Our cities are currently #9 and #10 in the Europe-Asia-Oceania-Africa competition.

In the Eurasia-Africa-Oceania part of the #CityNatureChallenge, Wellington is currently sitting 2nd in the number of species and Christchurch at 7th, out of 374 cities.
It's a great start, although Melbourne has recently slipped ahead of Christchurch. We'll have to do something about that.

Ōtautahi-Christchurch, #NZ, is approaching the end of day 2 of the 4-day #CityNatureChallenge. It's been a BIG couple of days, with more observations by more observers than we've ever had.
Wellington still remains out ahead of us and we've got two more days of observing to go.
Spread the word and let's show Wellington, and the world, all the wild species that live in our city. We're up to 1,194 species at the end of Day 2 and there are a lot more to find.
-
You can follow all the #NZ #CNC2024 action live at https://inaturalist.nz/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-aotearoa-new-zealand
A side competition to watch is the University Challenge between Victoria Uni, the University of Canterbury, and Lincoln University. Lincoln and Canterbury are neck and neck at the moment.

The #CityNatureChallenge in Aotearoa is off to a cracking start and the weekend is upon us. Remember to get out the #iNaturalist app and show the world some of the amazing species living around you.
If you’re in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, like I am, note that Te Upoko o te Ika-Wellington is rollicking ahead of us. They’re >1,500 observations and >300 species ahead.
It’s still early in the race. Are we just going to sit around and let the capital city sail away to an easy victory?!

*IT'S CITY NATURE CHALLENGE TIME!*
From today (April 26th) through Monday, folx all over the world are all heading out into their surrounding areas to make as many observations of the natural world as possible!
CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal!
Hit me up with any questions! Download the iNaturalist app! Then go to https://CityNatureChallenge.org to find your area project or the global project to join us in the excitement!

Morena Ōtautahi. It’s the morning of Day One of the #CityNatureChallenge and Wellington has definitely woken up, and is off to an early lead.
To help us catch up, use the free #iNaturalist app to photograph a species. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what it is. The identifiers on iNaturalist will figure that out for you.
The global City Nature Challenge is to see how many people we can get outside looking at nature over the next four days, and how many species we can all find.
#CNC2024 #NZ -
Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, is currently **winning** the global #CityNatureChallenge by 5 observations!
Of course, it's just past midnight here and it's not 26 April in the rest of the world yet.
But still. Winning!
😄

The #CityNatureChallenge starts tomorrow. That's four days of observing, Friday–Monday, followed by a week to upload and identify everything.
Four days, 12 hours a day, is 2,880 minutes. The craziest observers can make double that number of observations, and still find time to eat and sleep.
How do we do it? I've made a journal post with some tips on how to efficiently make lots of iNat observations.
-
@mhaklay City Nature Challenge falls entirely in April this year (perhaps because of this), so lots of opportunity. I might make 500 species this year with a bit of careful planning.

Yesterday evening I was lucky to be at the launch of a special photo exhibition at Tūranga, the central library of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. It celebrates the #CityNatureChallenge on #iNaturalist, diving into some of the amazing observations made by six local amateur naturalists.
The library’s designers did a super job. It’s well worth checking out.
Also, 26–29 April is this year’s global City Nature Challenge! Ōtautahi has lots of free events planned.

Next year's City Nature Challenge - likely the largest bioblitz in the world! - will be held as usual over the last weekend of April: Friday-Monday, 4/26-4/29. This year will be my 5th as a Brooklyn Borough Captain in the NYC City Nature Challenge.
Our 1st planning meeting is in 4 weeks. To sign up as an individual, or partner organization, visit:
