#PlasticPatrol: the #CitizenScientists tackling #litter in #Australian #waterways
#Plastics make up the majority of litter across the country. In the absence of regulation, the public are taking matters into their own hands
by James Norman, Fri 30 Jan 2026
"Neil Blake weighs a paper bag of fake grass fragments he has collected from a stormwater gutter near #DarebinCreek in #Melbourne’s north.
"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.
" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.
"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.
"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.
"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.
"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

#Webinar - #Marsh and #Stream Explorers: A Treasure Hunt to Find Healthy Freshwater #Habitats in #Maine
Apr 22 2026
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm"Curious about what critters live in your local streams and freshwater marshes? Come learn about Maine Marsh and Stream Explorers, a collaborative #CommunityScience project between #MaineAudubon and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (#MEDEP). This program trains volunteers to survey for #macroinvertebrates, or large #AquaticInsects, in streams and freshwater #marshes statewide. With many macroinvertebrates sensitive to temperature, #pollutants, and other environmental stressors, their presence or absence serve as an important indicator of overall wetland health. This data then becomes an invaluable screening tool for #MaineDEP to prioritize where more-indepth water quality assessments should be conducted.
"In this webinar you’ll learn about what the Marsh and Stream Explorers project has accomplished and its impact on water quality monitoring statewide. We’ll look at our overall results, share our successes, and talk about future goals of the project. Fish, Precious!
Yes, the world is a dangerous mess right now but not everything is terrible. Exhibit A: The Fish Doorbell is back!
The Fish Doorbell — The Fish Doorbell
Every spring, thousands of fish swim through the Oudegracht in Utrecht, searching for a place upstream to lay their eggs. But the Weerdsluis is often closed. You can help the fish continue their journey! If you see a fish, press the doorbell. This alerts the lock operator to open the lock.
Love this!

Finally wrote up the muddy trip to Pendeford Mill Reserve on Monday. It's actually the first proper post on the site to have all it's images and meta-data (AuHD issues here I feel) Anyway, a write up of a muddy walk that claimed at least one soul (well sole) and led to my first almost in focus shot of a treecreeper.

Help needed to photograph and record #JoshuaTrees!
Joshua Trees bloomed earlier than usual – and it spells trouble for iconic succulent
By Chris Nesi
Published Jan. 25, 2026, 10:13 p.m. ET"Southern California’s famed Joshua trees are flowering months ahead of schedule, baffling scientists and raising fears about the future of the species.
"The #MojaveDesert succulents typically bloom between February and April, timing their flowers to the arrival of the #YuccaMoth — the only insect capable of pollinating them.
"The moth lays its eggs inside the flowers, producing fruit whose seeds are later spread by rodents.
"This year, however, the trees’ familiar white-and-yellow blooms began appearing on late October, sparking concerns that the early flowering could disrupt the delicate relationship between the trees and their sole pollinator — and threaten the species’ ability to reproduce."
[...]
"Yoder suspects this year’s early rains may have triggered the premature bloom. His Yoder Lab is now asking members of the public to help document the phenomenon by uploading photos of Joshua trees in bloom to #iNaturalist, allowing scientists to gather data on whether the early flowering affects fruit production.
" 'We’re looking for as many folks out there as possible to help observe this phenomenon,' Yoder said.

#Orcas filmed making out in the wild for first time
Footage captures a pair of orcas nibbling each other's tongues in Kvænangen #fjords in #Norway. #Scientists think this rarely seen behavior could play a role in social bonding. This tongue-nibbling behavior has only previously been seen on a handful of occasions in captivity. The action, described as resembling "#kissing" by the #citizenscientists who observed it, may play a role in social bonding, researchers suggest.

Now this (and #MerlinApp) are good uses for #Smartphones!
Structure and functionality of the #FloraIncognita app
"The Flora Incognita app currently allows the automatic identification of more than 16.000 vascular plant species. The identification process is intuitive: take a picture of the plant with the camera of the smartphone or #tablet. The unknown plant is then automatically identified in seconds. In addition to the identified plant species, a fact sheet displays further information such as characteristics, distribution, or protection status. The app was launched in April 2018 and is freely available in 20 languages for Android, iOS, and Harmony OS devices.
"The app guides users through an adaptive process of taking one or more images depicting specific organs of an unknown plant, such as a flower or a leaf. Which images are requested and in which order is determined automatically based on an observation’s context, that is, the growth form of the unknown plant, the current season and already acquired information. The identification process requires an internet connection for transferring images and metadata to the server and receiving results. In areas without network coverage, users can capture unknown plants and save those observations in offline mode. When, later, there is a network connection, those plant findings can be identified with all important metadata pertaining to that image (i.e. date and location). All images are analyzed using a cascade of deep neural networks on the Flora Incognita computer cluster. The app will either suggest a single plant species or a short list of similar species ranked by the identification probability. For each species, a comprehensive fact sheet and informative images depicting different perspectives and organs are provided. Users are requested to confirm the correct species at the end of the process to commit an observation."

The Moon brings a wild but precarious fish orgy to #California's beaches https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240419-californias-beaches-are-home-to-wild-fish-orgies-during-the-grunion-run
"Millions of small #fish fling themselves on Californian beaches to have sex – strictly under the full or new Moon. This incredible mating ritual is threatened, but #CitizenScientists are diligently working to save it... the small silvery #grunions spawn onshore, flinging themselves from the #ocean onto the sand. In addition, they only spawn during full or new moons – because they need a high #tide"
