  7. NASA: Volunteer Develops Machine-Learning Tool to Identify Rare Clouds. “Certain kinds of clouds are misbehaving – appearing more often and lower in the sky than they used to. To help identify the factors influencing these changes (e.g. shifts in Earth’s long-term weather patterns), scientists have asked people around the world with cameras to submit fresh images of these clouds as a part […]

  9. 🦌🦥🐘🐪 #FossilFriday — During and after the drainage of glacial Lake Agassiz into glacial River Warren—now the Minnesota River—river-level fluctuations, combined with the gneiss bedrock at Granite Falls, created a shifting landscape ideal for collecting sedimentary deposits and preserving bones. The Yellow Medicine County Historical Society holds a collection of bison remains from the area, some from a famous bison kill site: the Peterson Site.

  12. The 1916-1919 journey of HMS Whitby Abbey is made available in Journey Plotter.
It was transcribed by Brian, who wanted to find out more about his grandfather, who sailed on board Whitby Abbey during that period.

Thank you for sharing Brian. 👍

I have attended some very interesting presentations about the issue from members of Sarah Styler’s group at this year’s CSC #2026 conference; including community involvement in the project. Good to see this issue getting coverage in the General News media now. #McMasterUniversity #research #environment #pollution #citizenscience

  19. The Guardian: Meet the army of amateur archivists racing to save US history in national parks. “Hundreds of volunteers, many of whom are anonymous, have submitted photos of national signage to the digital archive. As of 3 August, the site has compiled 17,236 photos, including at least one in nearly every national park and historic site in the country.”

  20. 🦌🦥🐴🐘🐪 For #FossilFriday — Megaloceros giganteus, the Irish elk, which I was able to visit in June. Specimen USNM 7051 is masterfully mounted at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

The mount features a massive steel armature to support its nearly 3.4–3.6 meter antler spread. Studies show Megaloceros dropped and regrew its antlers each year.
