🔭 NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched, and Zooniverse is getting ready for its data. Galaxy Zoo is building projects on galaxy shapes and spectra; Planet Hunters is exploring how Roman data could feed exoplanet searches. First science data are expected in 2027 — with new tasks for volunteers.

🔭 Open call for amateur astronomers: the ER UMa-type dwarf nova Gaia24aeg is in superoutburst.
A Kyiv–Wrocław–Warsaw team observed it for 3.4 hours on 9 Aug with a 0.7 m telescope and measured superhumps with a period of 0.077 d (~111 min) and an amplitude of 0.15 mag. You can upload your own photometry to BHTOM, the EU-funded open-source platform that processes it automatically.

#HumanitarianGive your time to Nepal.
Analyse images from the Nepal floods to assist aid workers.
At the moment they're out of images to process but there will be more to do on Wednesday.
"Hello Zooniverse Planetary Response Network projects community,
To get started right away, click here: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/alicemead/planetary-response-network-nepal-flash-flooding-2026/classify/workflow/32649
On 26 August 2026, a major flash flood struck Rasuwa District in northern Nepal, causing severe damage to local infrastructure and roads. Rescue and recovery groups on the ground urgently need accurate maps so they can get help where it's needed most.
Currently, aid agencies in the Nepal are working to get support to those who need it the most. We are providing the data to the International Charter of Space and Major Disasters, who will use it to inform humanitarian organisations on the ground.
This project aims to identify regions of flooding and road blockages in the affected regions of Nepal. You will be shown before and after images, and asked to detect signs of these attributes. The images for this project have been provided to us by Planet Labs, using 3-metre resolution data.
When classifying, please just do your best, and remember that we ask multiple people to examine each image, and we will gather consensus from the crowd. Even if you are uncertain, your best judgment is very valuable!
We need lots of support on the project to classify the data as soon as we can, to ensure data reaches humanitarian organisations as soon as possible. If you can help by making classifications, please click https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/alicemead/planetary-response-network-nepal-flash-flooding-2026/classify/workflow/32649.
As always, please remember to take breaks whenever you need or want to. If you are in distress and need or want support, here is a list of international mental health support hotlines and international crisis support hotlines so you can get support wherever you are in the world. https://findahelpline.com/
Thank you,
The Planetary Response Network team" -
☄️ The Global Meteor Network has confirmed the 26-Bootids (TSB#571). Amateur-run cameras recorded a distinct radiant concentration on 3–4 March 2026 at RA 217°, dec +25°, geocentric velocity 49.5 km/s. It is a long-period comet type stream and the case study meets the criteria for IAU-MDC established status. Based on GMN data from 2025 and 2026. (31 Aug 2026)

☄️ Comet 220P/McNaught refuses to fade. After a June outburst (~8,000× brightening) came another on 5 Aug, roughly 600×, up to mag 7. It's holding near mag 9 and amateurs and smart telescopes are tracking it in the dawn sky. Dan Bartlett's montage shows the blue-green coma swelling then contracting. Closest to Earth 12 Oct (1.043 au).

🌠 An all-sky composite from four meteor cameras at Valašské Meziříčí Observatory (CEMeNt network, Czechia) caught 1,706 meteors on the night of 12–13 Aug. Most are Perseids – their trails converge on a single radiant in Perseus. Fainter showers show up too: kappa Cygnids and the diffuse antihelion source. Amateur camera networks delivering hard data.

🌒 The Czech Astronomical Society is collecting reader images of the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse. Over Czechia up to 88 % of the solar disc was covered and the Sun set while still deeply eclipsed; totality crossed parts of Iceland and Spain. Observers can still add their own photos to the gallery.

🔭 HOYS lightcurve of the week 398: the young star V1787Ori, just south of the Orion Nebula in the L1641N field. Amateur V, R and I-band data from last winter. The star is very red, hence the large offsets between filters. Real variability shows on both long and short timescales – the apparent “noise” is correlated across filters, so it is genuine.

Backyard radio astronomy: writing in IEEE Spectrum, David Schneider shows how an RTL-SDR dongle, an LNA and a home-built horn antenna were enough to measure the Doppler shift of the 1420 MHz hydrogen line and plot the Milky Way's rotation curve — the key evidence for dark matter. His results match professional measurements.

The CARMELo network has published its July 2026 report. Eighteen amateur SDR receivers in Italy, Spain, the UK, Switzerland and the USA track meteor echoes off France's GRAVES radar (143.050 MHz). New this time: an in-house Python algorithm computing the Radio Zenithal Hourly Rate. A single receiver costs about €210 to build.

🌟 HOYS Citizen Science (Univ. of Kent) shows the light curve of young star V557Mon near the Rosette Nebula. In the 2024–25 winter season it brightened by ~4 mag — an EXor-type outburst. Data come from amateur astronomers; outside outburst it sits at ~19.5 mag in R.

🔭 Which field do amateur astronomers image most? In the HOYS citizen-science archive (Univ. of Kent) the Orion Nebula (M42) leads with almost 23,800 images — some 7,200 of them in the V band. Volunteer photometry powers the hunt for variable young stars. Rule: one stacked image per user, target, filter and night.

"A thousand people voluntarily buried their cotton underpants for two months—not to keep the Underpants Gnomes from stealing them, but as part of a citizen science project to map out soil health in 25 countries around the world. The results of this unique experiment were reported in a new paper published in the journal Plants People Planet."
