🪧 Lake James BioBlitz
September 19, 2026🌞 The North Carolina Native Plant Society Foothills Chapter and Lake James State Park are hosting a BioBlitz that invites the public to document plants, fungi, insects, birds, and other wildlife using iNaturalist. The event serves both as citizen science and environmental education.

✨ Nova Sagittae 2026 (V488 Sge) erupted on 25 Aug 2026 at magnitude 6–7, within reach of binoculars. Its discovery and follow-up are largely amateur work, with AAVSO issuing a comparison chart within hours. The Virtual Telescope Project imaged the classical nova.

Space Warps Needs You!
I did a post a few months ago about Space Warps, a new citizen science project on the Zooniverse platform, in which volunters can search to find rare and elusive strong gravitational lenses in never-before-seen images captured by the European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope. The project aims at shining a light on dark matter in galaxies and providing clues about the mysterious thing call dark energy.
The Space Warps Euclid project is entering the closing stages, but there is still about a week in which you can help with refining the final sample. Read more about it here:

I want to monitor #DataCenter sound and need a test source for #Infrasound.
The Union Pacific West Coast corridor is just 1,300 feet - about 1/4 mile or 4 city blocks - from my home. Railway measurements show substantial energy below 20 Hz; one recent study even identified a repeatable 14.2 Hz component from a diesel train.
I'm ecstatic: the constant freight trains may become my infrasound laboratory.

#CitizenScience afficionados, #Euclid scientists would like to again solicit your input for classifying #GravitationalLensing systems. We need a sprint finish before the science analysis can be completed. 18000 galaxies that are maybe acting as lenses are waiting for your eyes and brains.

Zooniverse has published the first-ever AI Ethics Framework for citizen science. A year in the making, built on 4 workshops and volunteer surveys with over 1,000 responses. It sets out key principles, a "5 Ws" approach for describing AI/ML use in a project, and recommendations for research teams. Nearly a third of Zooniverse projects now use AI or ML. Open data policy stays.

🐴🦥🐘🐪 #FossilFriday — Horse incisor & molar from Brown County
Brown County keeps delivering Ice Age finds — horse molars, mammoth tusk, and pelvis fragments from local gravels. Three New Ulm horse molars are already headed for radiocarbon dating, with more finds coming.
Lost Bones #7 is out this week and updates on Lost Bones #4 (the horse project) were previously posted:

🔭 The HOYS citizen science project (University of Kent) has published its milestone 400th "light curve of the week". It shows the variable star V908Per in the young cluster IC 348: half-magnitude swings on ever-changing timescales, larger amplitudes at shorter wavelengths – a textbook "Orion Variable". Amateur astronomers take the data; the archive is open.

I'm investigating whether MEMS microphones can be used for DIY monitoring of low-frequency sound and infrasound around hyperscale #DataCenters.
I'm considering a small run of breakout PCBs so the microphones can be tested sans SMT assembly. This could be useful to communities trying to independently characterize data-center noise.

OMG! This is brilliant. The King of Citizen Science, @mhaklay.bsky.social, who catalyzed my idea for #UCLChemAirPoll is now bridged across to Mastodon. I strongly recommend you follow him if you are interested in harnessing people power to gather data to change the world. #citizenscience #crowdsourcing #learning #data

Follow-up: I went further down the data-center #Infrasound rabbit hole. A noise complaint 2.464 miles from a data center led me to explore a <$100 ESP32 + differential-pressure-sensor logger, calibration, wind filtering and raw spectral data--and I found others doing related field research.

I'm exploring a DIY instrument to measure infrasound (<20 Hz) and low-frequency emissions near data centers, to complement a Class 2 sound-level meter.
Thinking ESP32 + differential pressure sensor + wind filtering + raw spectral analysis. Interested in comparing designs, calibration methods, and field measurements. Anyone else working on this or interested in collaborating?

🔭 Citizen science in Czechia: on the morning of 8 Sep 2026, asteroid (712) Boliviana will occult star TYC 1348-00100-1 (10.9 mag) in Gemini for up to 3.5 s. The 132 km wide shadow path crosses the country from Šumava (02:38:29 UT) to the Beskydy mountains, 29° above the eastern horizon. Every timing — positive or negative — refines the asteroid's shape and orbit. (7 Sep 2026)

Lost Bones #7 is now published!
In 1929, a nearly ten-pound mammoth molar was discovered west of New Ulm, Minnesota. It was donated to the University of Minnesota—and then effectively disappeared into nearly a century of museum transfers.A Mighty Beast follows my seven-year search for the tooth, from a single entry in a 1945 paleontological survey to its eventual rediscovery in a museum collection.
