  3. Playing a bit of Cities: Skylines for the first time in ages.

One thing I always want to do better with is public transport. I'd love to have a highly functional mixed mode transport system, but… I just don't know how to design it or judge efficiency!

Roads and transport links aren't terrible. You can see busy spots, upgrade roads or add new routes. And industry just kinda does its thing.

    But public transport? No clue!

  7. Man muss #CitiesSkylines einfach lieben... braucht 5 Jahre zum Starten, man spielt ne Stunde - und alles ist weg, weil Autosave nicht an ist. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! #Crap

  8. U tohohle songu se furt nemůžu zbavit dojmu, že někdo vzal #OST #CitiesSkylines a mixnul to do #DnB 😁

  9. Cities: Skylines asks a simple question: what if everything was your fault?

A city builder that turns zoning, traffic, and utilities into a mesmerizing spiral of cause and effect — and somehow makes it relaxing.

  10. Wie extrem hat es eigentlich #ColossalOrder eigentlich verkackt, dass der neue Entwickler von #CitiesSkylines einen Patch herausbringt und viele Dinge auf einmal gefixt sind, was CO offenbar nicht konnte?

  15. Hot take: subreddits that forces all game patch and troubleshoot discussion into megathreads obviously hate their members.

Yes it is marginally easier to moderate... Because nobody will read those threads and instead switch to another subreddit (see: the r/sims4 and r/TheSims for example) when asking questions or talking about bugs.

  17. I've been playing Cities Skylines a bit lately to help my son out. It's been fun, and reminded me of why I love the game. It's not perfect, but it's pretty damn close.

Stupidly I decided to install Cities Skylines II again, thinking "Surely they'd fixed all the problems, in 2 years".

Nope. You can still build a beautiful grid of city, then suddenly it'll collapse, with zoning squares no longer lining up, and roads becoming a random mess of zoning.

And, as usual, traffic, population, employment, etc is being fudged, along with new problems like weird fades to black after placing stuff, ghosting, etc.

It's an utter mess, and little surprise that Colossal Order were sacked by Paradox.

I don't hold up hope for anyone fixing it, let alone the mobile dev Paradox have stuck on it

  18. Want to develop a city builder game?
Here's some things I'd do if I had time for a project, and why I'd do them:

    • Avoid agent-based approaches to similate every citizen. It does sound cool and exciting, but vastly complicates your ability to balance many aspects of your game such as traffic or the economy since you need to tune those indirectly through individual agent decisionmaking. It threatens your game's performance and makes it difficult to realistically scale a large city. It's also the model for the biggest city builders in recent history; the alternative market (crowd-based simulation; compare SimCity 4) isn't served right now, which is a huge opportunity! Abstraction is your friend nowadays.

    • A unique setting or aesthetic goes a long way to set your game apart from others. Avoid generic medieval and modern-day North American settings. Examples for games benefitting from unique settings are Tlatoani, Tropico, Workers & Resources, . It's safe to say none of them would have had the success they did with a less unique setting.

    • Take advantage of the current trend of young people getting really into anti-car dependency, "urbanism" and sustainable city planning. Disregard the US-American SimCity gameplay model of roadside buildings and RCI zoning, and instead design your game with pedestrianised areas, walking, public transit and bicycles in mind from the ground up. Perhaps even rethink other aspects of your gameplay through that lens: traffic management doesn't have to be your game's main challenge. It might be balancing density against living conditions, or corporate demands against public demand.

    • Avoid secondary mechanics and genre-twist gimmicks. A unique city builder by itself is complex enough to develop and design, and there's no guarantee that your target audience wants to, say, furnish individual building interiors in a city builder.

    • Know your two target audiences: those looking for a beautiful dollhouse decoration experience, and those looking for a deep city design and management simulation (traffic/economy/layout). The former market seems quite saturated right now with tons of "cosy diorama"-style games and traditional AA city-builders; the latter niche isn't saturated at all.

    • Know who your target audience isn't. The city builder genre overlaps a lot with the factory logistics management genre, but trying to serve both audiences will disappoint all players. Why would someone interested in the city-building portion not simply play Cities: Skylines over your game, or Factorio or Railgrade for a good logistics factory manager? Workers & Resources is the only example of a successful city builder with factory-like elements, but the niche is insanely small and complex to develop for.

  19. After playing some Cities: Skylines for the first time in forever, and being thoroughly frustrated (albeit decently entertained) by the whole ordeal...

... and now looking at Cities: Skylines 2, which is supposedly the much worse game...

... well it looks like a significant part of the negative reaction to the game is that people are used to playing the original Cities: Skylines with more than a decade worth of mods and genuinely forgot that it has a vanilla base game.

It's so much better! It no longer has a ridiculous art style that makes water look like plastic, the air look deep blue, and industrial areas bright purple!

The road tools are functional! Scale is better! UI is better! And so many more features. I'm happy with it.

  21. Mam dwa glowne problemy z #anno117 #PaxRomana:
    1. jest krotka - kampania to dwie mapy, jakies 10h grania i elo - dla porownania, starenkie #Settlers4 to ok. 25 godzin
    2. tryb dowolny to... te same dwie mapy - ta gra az prosi sie o jakis randomizer, czyli mechanizm generowania mapy z losowo rozmieszczonymi wyspami, zasobami, itp., cos jak #CitiesSkylines - nope, nic z tych rzeczy
