Inspired by @samcarter ’s talk at DANTE’s spring meeting, Hans implemented cistercian numerals* in ConTeXt. With the next update, you’ll be able to use them as number conversion "c". (Since ~2 years you can already use Kaktovik numerals* as conversion "k".)

the internet is currently fascinated with #Cistercian numerals.
As a fan of chocolate-making monks and of weird glyphs, I approve.

This also gave me the chance to explain to my kids why indo-arabic numerals are cool: they saw the easy numbers up to 9999, and then I asked them: how do you represent 100000?

And yeah, there's "non-standard extensions" to Cistercian numerals, which need to be accepted and known by everyone .

But it's much better to have a zero.

Experiment with #Cistercian numerals extended to base 16, rearranged so it map to binary, a #glyph depict 16-bit numbers with quadrants depicting nibbles (4-bit), quadrant order is untouched.

4 original Cistercian numbers are mapped on power of two :

0001 -> 1 (Cistercian representation)
0010 -> 2
0100 -> 4
1000 -> 6

All nibble numbers are then defined by mixing those.

Packed all my tiny intros with these glyphs for fun, replacing stave by a dot makes cool glyphs. (and is less ambiguous)

I made some tiny tweaks to my Cistercian numerals watch face. The date and step count numerals are now just a little bit bolder, and there's finally a way to see the remaining battery power on screen: that thin black border around the edge will gradually shrink into the corners as it drains.

I finally thought to take a photo towards the end of the day when the time numeral is fairly complex!

My Cistercian watch face is basically finished! I've added numerals for date and step count, and tweaked the style of the diagonal lines (though I may tinker with that further). The one thing left is to add some way of displaying remaining battery life, but that'll likely be a bar rather than a numeral. I've improved my Cistercian watch face. I found the first version a little hard to read at an angle because of the chunky frame of the Watchy's aluminium case, so I've reduced the overall size of the numeral and beefed up the thickness of the lines. One downside is that the diagonal lines (not shown) are now a little too chunky, but that's okay because the style should be much easier to adjust in future.

Almost two years on, I'm happy to say that I've finally done it! I'd still like to add a battery indicator (and if I'm feeling really fancy, numerals for the date and a step counter), but I'm quite happy with the minimalist look of this as-is.
