This book examines the #migration of about a million #Muslim #refugees from the #Caucasus to the #Ottoman Empire, with chapters on resettlement in Anatolia, the #Balkans, and the Levant. It also tells the story of the making of the Ottoman refugee regime between 1860 and World War I.
This book, a product of 10 years of work, is grounded in archival research in #Turkey, #Jordan, #Russia, #Bulgaria, #Romania, #Georgia, #Armenia, #Azerbaijan, the UK, and the USA; and interviews with people in the #Circassian, #Chechen, and other North Caucasian diasporas. The survivors of the genocide where mostly expelled from their homelands in the Northwestern Caucasus, resulting in the Circassian #diaspora. Nowadays only ~14% are still living in their original homeland. The rest of the ~5,3 million people are mostly living in Turkey (2.5m), Syria (250k) and Jordan (100k).

The majority of the Circassians are practising #Sunni #Islam (only converted after 1717). Religious minorities are Christians and people practising #Khabzeism, the original 'pagan' religion of the Circassians (~85k). The remaining population in the #Caucasus speak one of the #Circassian languages, belonging to the Northwestern Caucasian language family. The diaspora is bilingual or only speak the language of the country of residence.
