on the contrary, i'm wondering if #finland is ready to take back #karelia and if #turkey can move into #circassia

what i'm telling you is that #russia is in serious decay on all topics

    you are absolutely correct, now

    but in 5, 10, 20 years?

  3. #Ukraine Rada (parliament) has recognised 19th #genocide of #Circassia

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, has recognised the Circassians’ right to self-determination and the 19th century genocide perpetrated against them by the Russian Empire, making Ukraine the second country to recognise the genocide after Georgia.

    https://oc-media.org/ukraine-recognises-circassian-genocide/

This topic is close personally, as I’ve visited today’s Kabardino-Balkaria in #Russia hundreds of times and know plenty of Kabardian aka Circassian aka Cherkess people (who call themselves “Adyghe”, to make things more complicated). In the republic’s capital Nalchik there’s a monument dedicated to the Genocide but local authorities have been gradually restricting the window for the locals to commemorate the event, as the whole remembrance of Circassian genocide is at a stark contrast with official narrative of Russians “bringing civilisation” and smaller nations “joining” Russia rather than being simply decimated and then annexed.

  5. Lithuanian history tells us that #Circassia's independence is possible.

The Lithuanian nation, which remained under Muscovite occupation for more than 120 years (1795-1918), lost its national identity as a result of heavy Russification policies and completely forgot its native language except for a few villages far from the center. In such an environment, #Lithuania gained its independence as a result of only a few thinkers pointing the way to independence and managed to raise a generation with high national consciousness and whose native language was Lithuanian in just 20 years.

This national consciousness allowed the Lithuanian nation to preserve its culture, identity and language during the Nazi occupation that started with World War II and then the Soviet occupation that would last longer.

Today, Lithuania is an independent state that is a member of the EU and NATO with a population of 2,900,000 and a per capita national income exceeding 50,000 dollars.

As the Circassian Nation, there are many lessons to be learned from Lithuania's history and its struggle for freedom.

  6. Fun fact: For centuries, Circassians have been part of the ruling elite in Egypt, tracing back to 1297. They originate from this region between Russia and Georgia called Abkhazia. They have a presence in Egypt to this day, like the Abaza (Arabic for Abkhaza) family

  21. This podcast[^1] is a treasure trove of quotes! An extract from a letter written by the Western Circassians to their representatives in Constantinople around 1830’s.

The Circassians, who were at war with Russian Empire for a few decades already, didn’t have much respect for the European emissaries:

The Europeans are all afraid of the Muscovites, so have no doubt that when Russia puts pressure on them, they will wash their hands of us and do to us what they did to the Poles.

And here you can see the spirit of Zelensky’s “I don’t need a ride, I need weapons”, only two centuries earlier:

Tell the visitors from European countries that we are not asking them for money, but only for arms and ammunition. We are prepared to pay for it in full, and if they have the courage to send their merchant ships to us, we will load them with grain or any of our products. And if they are not brave enough to fight with the Muscovites, they should send some of their officers to us so that they could see with their own eyes how to defeat the Muscovites and tell people back home what the Circassian style of war is.

Circassians didn’t have a high opinion about the European diplomacy either:

We have heard that the European states have such a notion as “politics”. When their representatives talk to us, they often mention this word. What is this wild beast - politics? We asked about it to traders who have been to our land and Circassians who have been to Istanbul. Some said that politics is hypocritical behaviour, while others said that politics is about having a rotten heart, but not showing it. If this is true, then we are wasting our time with them. You know very well that a rotten man will not live a minute in our land.

This rather idealistic attitude however has eventually sewn seeds of their own defeat in their struggle against Russia. Circassians and other Caucasian nations were highly individualistic and principled. As I remember from his memoirs, Circassian leaders were actually too principled even for the a Polish emissary Teofil Łapiński (Poles being exemplary for their anarchist nature), who complained that every each of them pushes their own military strategy and they’re unable to cooperate, thus losing to ineffective but numerous Russians.

The Circassians however also expressed a very sober view on what we would today call appeasement of #Russia:

But what has particularly surprised us is what we have heard from the English staying here, that they intend to conquer the Muscovites by means of this politics. Woe to those who swim in these waters! Because they should know that when it comes to hypocrisy, meanness, duplicity and banditry, they will have no chance of surpassing the Muscovites in this. It takes bayonets, guns, troops and action to defeat them.
