It’s #LetterboxdFriday again so here are my #LastFourWatched coming your way with 2 of my favorites of the year so far
Lovely, Dark & Deep (2023) dir. Teresa Sutherland - Disorienting moody tale of a park ranger lost in the woods shows strong direction and acting but a little light on story.
Immaculate (2024) dir Michael Mohan . Second viewing for one of my favorites of the year. Giallo fans will notice the setting from Bay of Blood and a musical cue by Bruno Nicolai in this commentary on the Catholic Church that would make Lucio Fulci smile. Drawing from early Polanski and Ken Russell among others in a classic cinema style that maintains tension throughout . Moments of wince inducing gore and suspense that never go too far but always threaten to. Ultimately carried by a powerhouse performance from Sydney Sweeney towards a primal scream of ending that smashes the patriarchy.
Straight to Hell (1987) dir. Alex Cox - director’s cut rewatch of the punk Spaghetti Western Homage for Joe Strummer’s birthday
Strange Darling - much hyped that doesn’t disappoint. While I normally don’t care about spoilers I’m reluctant to say anything here other than go see it NOW!! Brilliant directing from JT Mollner and acting from Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner and cinematography from Giavanni Ribisi that propel this rollercoaster ride forward while subverting your expectations of everything throughout. One of the year’s best and soon to be most talked about. I can’t wait to see it again.
