  1. The Shrouds (David Cronenberg, 2024) A very calm film about death, grief, bodies and desire. At times, it feels distant, but there's a genuine emotional core here, also about shutting your body off from eroticism, the remembrance of desire. Thought-provoking ideas, as per usual with #Cronenberg, that sometimes border on the taboo. I do admire his honesty and fearlessness. In the end, there's no one like Cronenberg.

  2. After Hours (Martin Scorsese, 1985) 4K Restoration at the cinema. An unusual film for #Scorsese, a surreal farce that strongly echoes Buñuel and Kafka. A strange, circular dream in the Old New York full of attractive but strange women who turn on the hapless office worker, Paul (played with the right ambivalence by Griffin Dunne.) Great, nervous cinematography that gives the film its unique feel.

  3. I did watch 28 years later and was darkly amused at the end scene. The sequal is here alreadyv so I'll get to view it all through my fingers once again #movies #CinemaMastodon

  4. ‘“It’s incredible to feel appreciated and to receive this gift before the end of my life,” she says in her unmistakable husky voice when we meet on Zoom. “I think I’m being honoured as much for being authentic as for my acting. It has sort of come full circle.”’ 📽️ 🇺🇸 🎭 🎞️ #film #movies #cinema #CinemaMastodon #ClassicHollywood #OldHollywood #VeniceFilmFestival #MovieStars #KimNovak

  5. SPACE ADVENTURE コブラ (Osamu Dezaki, 1982) Film version of the space opera manga and animation series. Can be watched as a stand alone. It has this typical tragic storyline that is characteristic of anime from that era. But the main attraction is the artwork, which is dreamy and filled with clever compositions. Also features two very Daft Punk-like scenes of a robot playing the organ and a superb club scene. #CinemaMastodon #anime #film

  6. The Phoenician Scheme (Wes Anderson, 2025) Was very close to skipping this one, after all, Anderson has been chugging out these agreeable, mediocre films for a while now. And my suspicion turned out to be true. I love the 1950s Great Works in the East aesthetic and Del Toro is pretty good too, but that's about it. Surprisingly light on humour and I'm bored with his father complex. #film #CinemaMastodon

  7. An excellent spy thriller in the style of Ludlum, Bagley, or le Carré. Some of the tradecraft is a bit ‘can they actually do that with modern tech‽” but you suspend disbelief because it flows well.

Rami Malek isn’t my favourite actor, but he’s very believable here as a CIA analyst who’s biting off far more than he can chew, determined though he may be.

Jon Bernthal is, as always, perfectly relaxed and inhabits his character as though he’s played him for decades. He can do so much with so little, it’s embarrassing to other actors’ skill level.

Perfect fare to end my week with.

  10. Ikarie XB 1 (Jindřich Polák, 1963) A very enjoyable Czechoslovakian science fiction film based on a story by Stanislaw Lem. It has that classic dated science fiction look, but this is offset by great modernistic cinematography and electronic music. The first half, where the crew adapts to life on board, is excellent, while the second half, when they encounter problems, is slightly messy. The ending is beautiful, though. #CinemaMastodon #film #scifi

  11. 老虎出更 | Tiger on the Beat (Lau Kar-Leung, 1988) Shaw Bros martial legend tries his hand at heroic bloodshed with Chow Yun-Fat in a typical goofy mood. Ti Lung and Gordon Liu make an appearance and deliver the old-school kung fu, but this buddy film is mainly remembered for the climactic scene where Yun-Fat displays a very cool shotgun trick. Enjoyable for the Hong Kong enthusiast but not essential viewing. #CinemaMastodon #film #hongkong boxd.it/9ZycC1

  12. 水の中の八月 | August in the Water (Gakuryu Ishii, 1995) A mysterious sci-fi new age film about a girl who awakens from a coma and is drawn to unknown energies in a town that suffers drought and a strange epidemic. In many ways, a baffling film that I should have loved more, although it's filled with superb shots (with peak 90s colours) and a great synth soundtrack. Intriguing but Ishii made much better films. #CinemaMastodon #film boxd.it/9XTmvj

  13. 'The Killing Game' | 殺人遊戯 | 'Satsujin Yugi' (1978), directed by #TôruMurakawa and staring the incomparable #YusakuMatsuda.

  14. Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, 2007) Although I read the first volume of Persepolis, I somehow never got a chance to watch the adaptation. It's now showing in a 4K restoration (already?). With Satrapi as director, the film retains the beautiful, minimalistic black & white style. The result is a unique film about the individual struggle in a cruel world, shockingly so, although moments of humour soften the blows slightly. #CinemaMastodon #film #animation

  15. Memoir of a Snail (Adam Elliot, 2024) Enchanting stop-motion animation about the long struggles of a girl growing up. Only the thought of her separated twin brother and the eccentric Pinky keep her going. Heavy subject matter admirably presented with a unique sense of Australian humour. Only during the end credits did I realise Nick Cave read the hilarious, inept poem by the postman. #CinemaMastodon #film

  16. Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant (Ariane Louis-Seize, 2023) Another interesting update of the vampire mythos, which can be read in a number of ways. A young #vampire with a sympathetic family refuses to start biting people. Eventually cut off from her blood supply, she has to come up with a friendly solution. Moody and witty. #CinemaMastodon #film

  17. Un homme et un femme (Claude Lelouche, 1966) A very popular film (I knew the soundtrack by osmosis) that won every prize imaginable. The story is as basic as can be: two people fall in love but are still haunted by their former relationship's tragic ending. Well acted and technically innovative, but in the end, it's quite dull to watch two people fall in love, especially if one is a race driver. #CinemaMastodon #film

  20. Mahler (Ken Russell, 1974) Interesting attempt at the biopic with the usual surrealistic, arty and uncanny flare one can expect from Russell. The first half is great and unpredictable yet somehow it slowly becomes more of a standard biographical film ticking off the important moments in the life of the composer. Looks and sounds sumptuous. #CinemaMastodon #film boxd.it/93nGTd

  21. AGGRO DR1FT (Harmony Korine, 2023) Korine ups his game with a colourful and adventurous mashup of cinema, hip-hop and game esthetics. The sound and the music really carry the film. Quite special, although I'm not sure if it's a new beginning for cinema or the end station of culture during multinational capitalism.

  22. Companion (2025)

An edgy thriller that blends sci-fi, horror, and satire. The film also explores themes of consent and toxic relationships, incorporating elements of suspense, dark humor, and moments of violence to deliver a thought-provoking narrative.

  23. Paris nous appartient (Jacques Rivette, 1961). I love Rivette's films, his singular storytelling style, and his modest dream logic. His style is already locked in his debut film, which is beautifully shot. Is there a secret to be uncovered, or is everybody playing a game? The paranoic dilemma is slowly unravelled.

  24. 晩春 | Late Spring (Yasujirō Ozu, 1949) A beautiful, calm and in the end melancholic film about an interesting father-daughter relationship. Both are happy with their lives but society subtly demands a change. Exquisite cinematography again comes into focus thanks to another sublime restoration. Loved everything about this.

  25. The Brutalist (Brady Corbet, 2024) The 215-minute runtime looked daunting but I was never bored throughout. The film looks great, especially on 70 mm and there are some great moments and Brody is in fine form. But in the end, it mostly felt distant, although I quite liked the sardonic epilogue the more I think about it.

  26. Better Man

A Robbie Williams biopic/musical/fantasy hybrid told through the eyes of a mo-cap CGI chimpanzee. Despite knowing little about his career beforehand and having a slightly lengthy runtime, the film remains oddly captivating and never boring.

  27. Inspired by @Liquidream I had a look at my 2024 movie watchlist and, while some of them were rewatches, most of them were new to me.

My passion for the Golden Age of Hollywood continues unabated and my favourite movie of the year was A Matter of Life and Death (1946) which I had read about but never seen and I think my favourite new release movie was probably Perfect Days (2023), though Fall Guy (2024) and Memoir of a Snail (2024) come in close behind.
