À Anvers, le FOMU présente une rétrospective d’envergure de la photographe américaine à travers deux expositions permettant de couvrir cinquante ans de carrière. À « Early works » qui rend compte de ses débuts répond « Anti-fashion » qui illustre sa fascination pour la mode, dressant une critique féroce du milieu en remettant en question les canons de beauté établis.

« Entre attraction et rejet, Cindy Sherman est très vite confrontée à un rapport ambigu avec le glamour du monde de la mode. À partir de 1983, elle collabore avec de maisons de haute-couture et des magazines réputés. Plusieurs de ses créations trouvent alors leur origine dans des commandes de l’industrie de la mode. Dans les années quatre-vingt, celle-ci est fortement stimulée par l’accélération du consumérisme. Dans les commandes, comme dans son œuvre personnelle, Sherman va adopter une attitude critique, créant des photos de mode subversives au point de choquer plusieurs de ses clients, qui refuseront ses images, les considérant comme antipublicitaires. »

Pour relativiser le caractère « subversif » de son travil, notons tout de même que Cindy Sherman doit le succès de sa carrière au soutien indéfectible de la famille Vuitton, de magazines de luxe comme « Vogue » ou « Harper’s Bazaar ».

“Serious art anticipates the future as much as it reflects the present,” Hal Foster remarked in a 2015 interview. “By the same token serious art history is driven by the present as much as it is informed by the past.” In Fail Better, Foster, an art critic and historian whose influential work spans disciplines and decades, brings this peripatetic perspective to contemporary art, art criticism, art history, and his own work over the past 50 years.

In these 40 texts, Foster reviews artists from Richard Hamilton and Jasper Johns to Gerhard Richter and Ed Ruscha; considers contemporaries from Louise Lawler and Cindy Sherman to Jeremy Deller and Adam Pendleton; and traces the development of criticism since the early 1960s, with essays on such influential figures as Susan Sontag and Rosalind Krauss and institutions like Artforum magazine and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.

Taking his title from Beckett—“try again, fail again, fail better”—Foster notes that, etymologically, an essay is always an attempt, more or less failed. Critics fail artworks, because there can never be a definitive reading; art fails its historical moment, because it cannot resolve the contradictions that prompt it. But in these failures Foster finds historical consciousness, and with it the promise of future work, future illumination. In his “reckonings” he turns his own long history of criticism to account, and succeeds in conveying shifting concepts of art and criticism, the work of key artists and critics, and the relationships between criticism, theory, history, and politics over the last six decades.

Ich lese einen Artikel über Cindy Sherman anlässlich ihrer Austellung in Athen. Es geht um ihre Vergangenheit, darum wie sie zu ihren Film Stills und den Untiteld Aufnahmen gekommen ist. Sie erzählt, wie unbeholfen und ängstlich sie sich fühlte, als sie gerade nach New York gezogen war. Ihre Bilder, sagt sie, waren eine Möglichkeit Selbstvertrauen zu spielen. Diese Aussage gefällt mir sehr. Ich denke darüber nach, dass ja auch das Schreiben eine Art sein könnte, Selbstvertrauen zu spielen. Seit einiger Zeit schon denke ich darüber nach, dass ich im Schreiben, Situationen, die gerade nicht gut für mich sind, und die die Vergangenheit in einem häufig belastenden, schlechten Licht erscheinen lassen, ändern könnte. Ich könnte andere Möglichkeiten durchspielen. Mir eine andere Vergangenheit und eine andere Gegenwart erschreiben, die letztendlich Auswirkungen hätten auf das was ist. Weil sie mir schreibend Klarheit bringen könnten. Vielleicht stellt sich beim Schreiben heraus, dass auch andere Handlungen zu ähnlichen Auswirkungen geführt hätten. Vielleicht ist es einfach nur befreiend auf dem Papier eine ganz andere Rolle zu spielen. Auf jeden Fall, das weiß ich aus Erfahrung, ändert das Schreiben die eigene Haltung. Nicht grundlegend, aber manchmal dennoch maßgeblich.

Der erste Arbeitstag war sehr ruhig und voller Aufregung. Das Telefon blieb still, außer einer Kollegin hat niemand angerufen. Der Chef kam nachmittags vorbei. Aber nichts war vorbereitet. Ich verschicke ab Montag Karten für Vorstellungen, von denen die Mitglieder weder wissen, dass sie diese Stücke sehen werden, noch zu welchen Terminen. Der Programmzettel (der nicht zuletzt auch neue Angebote enthält, die unsere Bestellmengen beim Theater verändern werden) ist noch nicht einmal gedruckt worden. Die Leute werden also frühestens in der letzten Augustwoche das Programm bekommen, während das erste Stück bereits am 15. September gezeigt wird. Während ich mich wirklich empöre (weil ich Unprofessionalität und vor allem so eine Missachtung der Kunden- und Kundinneninteressen wirklich schlimm finde), sagt der Chef nur: Es ging nicht anders.
